Abington Falls to Aggies in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Doylestown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader against Delaware Valley University by the scores of 11-2 and 14-10 on Thursday afternoon at the DVU Softball Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead after freshman Lainey Scotese hit a two-out single down the right field line to score senior Hailey Gamble
 
* The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when Abington doubled its lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryley Albany.  Scotese, who reached base earlier in the inning on a fielding error, scored on the play. 
 
* The Abington lead quickly evaporated in the bottom of the inning when the Aggies answered with an 11-run frame.  Tori Backrath gave DelVal a 4-2 lead after connecting on a three-run homer.  Angelina Bresnen also homered in the inning as she capped the scoring with a grand slam to make the score 11-2.
 
* The Aggies' Madison Karns allowed a single by Gamble in the top half of the fifth but closed out the game retiring the final two batters to enforce the 10-run mercy rule ending the game after five innings.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gamble had two of Abington's four hits in the game as she went 2-for-3 with a run.
 
* Freshman Morgan Craig went 1-for-2 with a double, while Scotese went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. 

* Senior Gretchen Yanss struck out two batters in her 11th start of the season and is now two K's shy of 400 for her career.
 
* For the Aggies, Karns picked up the win as she allowed one earned run in five innings while striking out five. Brensen finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington jumped out to a massive lead in the first after dropping seven runs in the inning.  Scotese connected on a three-run home run for her first collegiate homer to get the scoring started.  Later in the inning junior Emily Foxhill and Gamble had back-to-back two-run hits to give the Nittany Lions a 7-0 lead.

* In the bottom of the inning the Aggies got three of the runs back to make the score 7-3.  Madison Donnelly had a two-run double in the frame.
 
* Abington increased its lead to 8-3 in the second after senior Callie Chambers drove in Yanss with a single to center field.
 
* The Aggies cut into the lead with another three-run inning in the third. Bockrath highlighted the inning with her second home run of the doubleheader.
 
* Leading 8-6 heading into the fifth, the Nittany Lions once again increased their lead.  With two outs in the inning, Scotese and Craig recorded back-to-back run scoring hits to give Abington a 10-6 advantage.
 
* However, in the bottom of the inning the Aggies responded with eight runs to grab their first lead of the game.  Brensen led the inning off with a solo home run and then capped the scoring with a grand slam later in the inning for her second grand slam of the day.  Her latest home run gave the Aggies a 14-10 lead.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Scotese tied her season-high with four RBI in the game as she finished 2-for-3 with a run.  Her first inning home run marked the first of her collegiate career.
 
* Yanss went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored three times.
 
* Albany also had three hits in the game as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
 
* For the Aggies, Bresnen finished the game 3-for-3 with four runs and five RBI after connecting on two home runs in the fifth inning.  Donnelly also had three hits in the game as she went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Karns pitched the final 5.2 innings for the Aggies to pick up her 11th win of the season.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th and 15th matchups between Abington and Delaware Valley since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-6 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Sunday, April 13 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Keystone College in a United East doubleheader.  The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, April 12 but with  rain forecasted in the area the doubleheader was shifted one day with a 1 p.m. start time.
