Abington Defeats Wildcats, 5-2

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team bounced back after its first defeat of the season earlier in the week with a 5-2 triumph over visiting Penn College in United East Conference (UEC) action on Sunday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The Nittany Lions improve to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play after the win.

How It Happened
 
* Penn College earned the team point after doubles play as the Wildcats picked up victories at second and third doubles.
 
* Abington's Krishna Gurram and Tripp Mangifesta won their first doubles match against Alexander Norris and John Finnegan by the score of 6-4.  With the match tied 4-4, Gurram and Mangifesta scored the final two points to grab the win.
 
* At first singles, Wenxu Gu lost the first game of the first set against Kyle Shuler but then went on to win 12 straight games to win the match in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0.  It marked Gu's eighth straight victory at first singles as he's now 8-0 on the year.
 
* Gurram got the win at second singles over John Finnegan with a straight sets victory by the score of 6-2 and 6-0.  After being up 3-2 in the first set, Gurram won nine straight games to close out the match.
 
* Trivikram Chitturi cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory at fourth singles over Logan Ogden which gave Abington a 3-1 team lead in the match.
 
* At sixth singles, Lucca Frederico clinched the win for the Nittany Lions after defeating Hunter Knosky in straight sets by the scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
 
*Mark Tymchenko went the distance at fifth singles against Seth Priestman.  After dropping the first set, 6-2, Tymchenko won the second set by the score of 7-5 to force a third set tie-break.  Tymchenko led the tie-break from beginning to end and with the score 6-5, he scored four straight points to pick up the win.
 
* Penn College earned one point in singles play with Norris picking up the team's lone win.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-2 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series winning the last five matches.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, April 14 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Berks in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
