Abington Clinches Postseason Berth with Win at Berks

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team is heading back to the United East Conference (UEC) Championships after defeating Penn State Berks, 5-2, on Monday afternoon at Grings Mill Park.  Abington's victory improves its conference record to 4-1 as the Nittany Lions currently sit in second place in the United East standings.

How It Happened
 
* Abington won the team point after doubles play winning both first and third doubles.  At first flight, Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta teamed up to defeat Muhammad Esmat and Jazae Maina-Itegi by the score of 6-2.  The Nittany Lions also won at third doubles with Lucca Frederico and Ulrich Commodore coming away with a 6-4 victory over Berks' Joseph Martin and Rajas Joshi.
 
* Gu improved to 9-0 at first singles this season after going the distance against Esmat.  Gu took the first set by the score of 6-3 before Esmat tied the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set. In the third and decisive set, Gu led 2-1 and went on to win four of the next five games to win the set, 6-2.
 
* Krishna Gurram won his second singles match against Talan Nguyen in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 6-4.  With the first set tied at 3-3, Gurram won the next three games to take the opening set.  In the second set he trailed Nguyen, 3-2 but rallied to win four of the next five games to win the set and match.
 
* Commodore cruised to victory in his sixth singles match with Joshi.  He won by identical 6-1 scores in both sets and as a result clinched the team victory for the Nittany Lions with the team's fourth 'team' point.
 
* Frederico went three sets with Martin at fifth singles.  Martin took the first set, 6-3, while Frederico won set two by the score of 6-4 to tie the match 1-1.  In the third set tie-break, Frederico led the entire way as he finished off the matchup with a 10-3 victory.
 
* For Berks, Maina-Itegi got the win at third singles, while Donovan Sullivan won a three-set match at fourth singles to account for both Berks' team points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 17th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 11-6 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
As previously mentioned, Abington has officially clinched a postseason berth into the upcoming United East Championships.  The Nittany Lions, with two matches to go, currently sit in second place in the standings with a 4-1 conference record.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 16 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Brandywine in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.
