Abington Shuts Out Brandywine

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team improved to 5-1 in the United East Conference (UEC) after defeating Penn State Brandywine, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The Nittany Lions currently sit in second place in the United East standings.

How It Happened
 
* Abington made quick work of Brandywine as the Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead earning the team point after doubles competitions.  Krishna Gurram and Anton Labas got the win at first doubles, while Ulrich Commodore and Trivikram Chitturi picked up the win at second doubles.  Both duos won their respective matches by the score of 6-0.  Abington also won third doubles by forfeit.
 
* In singles play, Mark Tymchenko shutout Louis Trolli at fourth singles by the scores of 6-0, 6-0.
 
* Tripp Mangifesta defeated Jonathan Parsons at first singles in straight sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-3.
 
* Labas nearly came away with a shutout against Elias Danesh as he got the win at second singles by the scores of 6-0, 6-1.
 
* Lucca Frederico won his third singles match over Julian Grossman in straight sets.  Frederico also nearly came away with a shut but won the first set, 6-1, before blanking Grossman in the second set, 6-0.
 
* Abington received the team points and fifth and sixth singles via forfeit.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2018-19 season.  Abington is now 3-2 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington has a chance to clinch a first-round bye with a victory in its regular season finale match against Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday.  Harrisburg is currently 6-0 in the United East.  A win could also put Abington in the running for the top overall seed pending the outcome of St. Mary's College (Md.) remaining conference matches.  The Seahawks, who own the tie-break over Abington, is currently 3-1 with three matches still to play.
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up the regular season as the Nittany Lions host Harrisburg on Saturday.  Match time is set for 2 p.m.
