Abington Clinches Postseason Berth with Win Over Gators

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team will be heading back to the postseason after its 4-3 triumph over Notre Dame of Maryland University on Tuesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus. The victory officially clinched a spot in next week's conference championships as the Nittany Lions are currently 5-2 in the United East and sit tied for third with Lancaster Bible College.

How It Happened

* Junior Morgan Schaefer gave the Nittany Lions the team win after sealing the deal on her fourth singles match against Tolulope Olowookorun.  Schaefer trailed the first set, 4-1 but went on to win 11 of the next 12 games in the match for the straight sets victory.  She won the match by the scores of 6-4 and 6-1. 
 
* Sophomore Laurie Flemming recorded her second straight shutout victory at first singles as she defeated Renee Rosales, 6-0, 6-0.  Flemming is now 10-2 this season at first singles.
 
* At third singles, junior Soniyah Youngblood defeated Morgan Lookingland in straight sets by identical 6-3 scores.  Youngblood was down 3-2 in the second set but went on to win four straight points for the win.
 
* Abington also got the team point in doubles play.  Flemming and senior Isabella DePorre won at first doubles by the score of 6-3, while Schaefer and Youngblood recorded a 6-2 victory at second doubles.
 
* For the Gators, Tam Truong earned the win at second singles, while Nwanneka Udolisa and Kritika KC won their respective matches and fifth and sixth singles.
 
Postseason Bound
Abington is heading to the conference championships for the 13th straight season and has qualified for the postseason every year since joining Division III in 2011-12.  The Nittany Lions also secured their first winning season since 2018-19 when the team concluded that year 8-7 overall.  Abington is currently 8-5 and 5-2 in conference play.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Notre Dame (Md.).
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, April 17 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cairn University in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
