Abington Splits United East Doubleheader with Falcons

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader against visiting Cedar Crest College on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions took game one by the score of 9-3, while the Falcons were victorious in game two by a 4-2 margin.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington led from beginning to end in the opener as the Nittany Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead.  Senior Hailey Gamble got things started with a leadoff base hit and advanced to second after the ball got by the centerfielder.  Gamble stole third and then scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run.  Later in the inning junior Jill Thomas drilled a double to left-center field that plated freshmen Lainey Scotese and Morgan Craig.
 
* Two innings later the Nittany Lions led 3-1 and by the end of the third had a 5-1 advantage.  Scotese drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Thomas recorded her third RBI of the game with a base hit to left that scored Craig.

* Cedar Crest scored a run in the top half of the fourth to make the score 5-2.  However, Abington answered with another three-run frame to increase its lead to 8-2.  With the bases loaded, Yanss hit a sacrifice fly to center field to scored junior Emily Foxhill.  Two batters later, Scotese singled to left to score Gamble and in addition sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz came around to score after the ball got by the leftfielder.
 
* Abington capped its scoring in the bottom of the fifth after a run scoring hit by Antosiewicz that made the score 9-2.
 
* Cedar Crest pushed across a run in the sixth after back-to-back sacrifice hits to score Laney Ferraro who led the inning off with a base hit.

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Scotese went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.
 
* Craig finished 2-for-4 with two runs, while Thomas went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
 
* Yanss (6-9) recorded her sixth win of the season as she held Cedar Crest to two earned runs in a complete game performance.  Fresh off her 400th career strikeout milestone, Yanss fanned seven batters to increase her career total to 412.
 
* Gamble and Foxhill each scored twice in the game.
 
* For Cedar Crest, Alex Mullen went 2-for-4, while Abby Adams drove in two of the Falcons' three runs.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Cedar Crest scored three runs in the top half of the third inning to grab the game's first lead. 
 
* Abington responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Gamble drove in a run with a double to right-center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Antosiewicz. 
 
* The Falcons added an insurance run in fourth with a run scoring single by Alexis Kline.
 
* Cedar Crests' Erin Gray held Abington hitless the final four innings and only allowed two base runners via a walk and a fielding error.  Both were eliminated with double plays by the Falcons.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Gamble went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Foxhill went 1-for-2 with a run. 
 
* Yanss also had a hit as she went 1-for-3.  She also pitched two innings of relief and added two more strikeouts to her afternoon.
 
* For Cedar Crest, Gray (7-8) limited Abington to two runs on three hits on her way to her seventh win of the season. Madison Nadasi went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Natalie Hasert finished 2-for-5 with a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth and sixth matchups between Abington and Cedar Crest since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-3 versus the Falcons in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 19 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Brandywine in the team's final regular season home game on the year.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.  Prior to the game the Nittany Lions will recognize the 2025 Senior Class in part of Senior Day festivities at Huntingdon Field.
