Abington Hosts Brandywine on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team recognized its 2025 Senior Class prior to facing off against Penn State Brandywine in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions celebrated seniors Callie Chambers, Hailey Gamble and Gretch Yanss who were competing in their final home regular season game. 
 
Brandywine defeated Abington by the scores of 9-3 and 10-8 in the doubleheader.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* It was a close back-and-forth game until the final two innings when Brandywine scored a combined six runs to pull away from Abington.  Brandywine broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.  They followed that up with four runs in the seventh to increase the lead to 9-3.  Gianna Duca had a two-run single in the seventh.
 
* Abington scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.  In the third, Gamble tied the game at 1-1 with a two-out single to center field that scored junior Emily Foxhill. Abington recorded another two-out score in the fourth when junior Jill Thomas hit a double to left-center field to score freshman Lainey Scotese.  Thomas' run scoring hit cut the Brandywine lead to 3-2.  Abington tied the game in the fifth at 3-3 after Antosiewicz drove in Foxhill with a base hit.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Riley Logan finished the game 2-for-3 with a double.
 
* Foxhill went 1-for-3 with a double and scored twice in the game. She also had a stolen base.
 
* For Brandywine, Madie Culbertson went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Lexi Bussenger finished 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. April Lewandowski (13-3) picked up her 13th victory of the season after holding the Nittany Lions to just two runs in seven innings.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the latter game, Abington sent 12 batters to the plate as the team scored seven runs on five hits in the frame. Gamble went 2-for-2 in the inning with a pair of singles. Logan and Antosiewicz each drove in a pair of runs as Abington led 7-0 after one inning of play.
 
* Brandywine got on the board in the third when Ava Craddock connected on a two-out triple to right field.  Craddock then scored on a base hit by Shelby DeCillis to make the score 7-3.
 
* Brandywine tacked on two more runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5 before grabbing the lead with four runs in the fifth.  Three straight doubles to start the inning jumpstarted the rally. DeCillis, Culbertson and Jordan DuBois all doubled in the inning.
 
* Brandywine entered the seventh inning leading 9-7 before adding an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Emma McElroy.
 
* Abington made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  Foxhill drove in freshman Morgan Craig with a base hit to bring the Nittany Lions to within two runs of tying the game at 10-8.  Abington had the game-winning run at the plate, but Isabella Hurta retired the final batter to halt the potential come-back bid by Abington.  Hurta picked up her eighth win of the season after pitching 6.1 innings of relief.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Gamble finished the game 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
 
* Logan went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI as she finished the doubleheader 4-for-7.
 
* Thomas went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.  She also reached base two other times with a pair of walks.
 
* For Brandywine, Culbertson finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Two of her three hits were doubles. McElroy and Craddock each drove in two runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever match-up between Abington and Brandywine.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cairn University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
