Abington Defeats Dolphins in Rout on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team had plenty to celebrate on Friday as the Nittany Lions defeated the University of Mount Saint Vincent, 24-4, in a non-conference contest at Alverthorpe Park on Senior Day.  Prior to the game, Abington recognized its nine players competing in one of their final home games at Alverthorpe.  The team recognized seniors, Ryan Bethel, Jamie Burkhart, Nate Evans, Jake Fallers, Shane Fillman, Gaetan Grandelli, Josh Henderson, Josh McGee and Owen Lynch.

How It Happened
 
*  A nine run third inning broke the game wide open as the Nittany Lions began pouring it on offensively. Fillman led the inning off with a walk and then later in the inning connected on a grand slam home run.  McGee and freshman TJ Coyne each drove in two runs in the inning.
 
* JT Jimenez put the Dolphins on the board in the top half of the fourth with a two-run home run.
 
* Abington got both those runs and some in the bottom of the inning after junior Paul Figueroa connected on a three-run homer over the center field fence.  Figueroa's long ball increased the Nittany Lion lead to 12-2.
 
* The Abington offense continued to roll with another two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Fallers launched a solo home run to left-center field and then later in the inning Figueroa drove in his fourth run of the game to make the score 14-2.
 
* The Nittany Lions' offense erupted for 10 more runs in the bottom of the sixth. McGee drove in two runs with a double, while sophomore Zach DiMario cleared the bases with a three-run double later in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Three players drove in four runs each, including Fillman who finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI.  He also walked twice in the game.  Fillman's third inning home run marked his third of the season and 10th of his career.
 
* McGee also drove in four runs as he finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two doubles.
 
* Figueroa was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a home run as he drove in four runs and scored two.  His fourth inning blast was his second of the season.
 
* Fallers finished 2-for-4 with his team-leading eighth home run of the year.  He also recorded three RBI and scored three times.
 
* DiMario recorded a season-high three RBI after his pinch-hit home run in the sixth.
 
* Freshman Eric David recorded his first collegiate hit as he batted twice in the bottom of the sixth.  He led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch and then when he came around to bat again in the inning drove in a run with a single through the left side for his first career base knock.
 
* Henderson (1-1) was the pitcher of record for the Nittany Lions as he went four innings allowing just two runs and striking out four batters.
 
* Bethel and Burkhart each pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the fifth and sixth innings respectively.
 
* For the Dolphins, Tyler Margolis went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Jason Albert finished 2-for-3.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Mount Saint Vincent.
 
Next Up
Abington is back in action on Saturday, April 19 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Lancaster Bible College in a United East Conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 12 p.m.
