Fallers Hits Four Home Runs in Slugfest with Chargers

Lancaster, Pa. – Senior Jake Fallers hit a combined four home runs in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at the LBC Baseball Field.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Chargers, 17-7, in eighth innings in game one.  However, the hosts got the better of Abington in game two with a 20-18 walk-off victory.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Fallers hit the first of his three home runs in game one in the top half of the first inning.  After a run scoring hit by senior Gaetan Grandelli, Fallers stepped in and connected on a two-run shot to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.
 
* After the Chargers got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, the Nittany Lions responded in the second.  Grandelli hit a two-out three-run home run and Fallers followed with a solo homer as the two went back-to-back to give Abington a 7-2 lead.

* The score remained 7-2 heading into the fifth inning.  Senior Josh McGee joined the home run party with a leadoff homer. Junior Corey DiMario drove in a run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, while junior Paul Figueroa scored from third off a balk.
 
* Abington had another three-run inning in the sixth to increase its lead to 13-4.  Redshirt junior Garrett Garofalo scored Fallers with a base hit who led the inning off with a walk.  Garofalo would later score on a two-run single by Figueroa.
 
* In the seventh, Fallers ripped a solo home run for his third of the game. 
 
* Abington capped its scoring in the eighth with its third three-run inning of the game.  Grandelli drove in a pair with a single down the right field line, while Fallers brought senior Shane Fillman across with a sacrifice fly.
 
* Sophomore Derek Aub retired the Chargers in order in the bottom of the eighth as the game was then called due to the 10-run mercy rule as Abington led 17-7.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Fallers fell one home run shy of tying the program's single game record for most home runs.  Former Division III Player of the Year Ryan McCarty hit four home runs against Gallaudet University back in 2022.  Fallers is the first player in program history to hit three home runs in a single game.  He finished the game 3-for-4 with four runs and five RBI.
 
* Grandelli went 3-for-6 with two runs and six RBI.  His second inning home run marked the third of the season.
 
* McGee finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.  His solo homer in the fifth was his second home run of the season.

* Figueroa finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Senior Owen Lynch improved to 4-0 on the year after going six strong innings.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Dylan Witkowski went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Micah Sloane also drove in two runs as he went 1-for-4 at the plate.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, both offenses collected a combined 38 runs and 40 hits, including 14 home runs.
 
* Abington trailed 7-6 entering the top half of the fourth.  The Nittany Lions pushed across six runs in the frame to regain the lead at 12-7.  After Grandelli and Fallers led the inning off with back-to-back singles, sophomore Donato Incollingo launched a three-run shot to make it a 9-7 game.  Later in the inning, DiMario connected on his second home run of the game with a two-run shot to make the score 12-7.
 
* Lancaster Bible tied the game at 12-12 in the fifth when Donavan Boles cleared the bases with a grand slam home run.
 
* Abington regained the lead in the top half of the sixth breaking the 12-12 tie.  DiMario drove in Figueroa with a base hit to center field.  Fillman followed and delivered a two-run homer to give the Nittany Lions a 15-12 lead.

* Lancaster Bible scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then another two runs in the seventh to take the lead back at 16-15. Everett Bell had a two-run double in the sixth, while Joey Stein and Shane Stephan each drove in runs in the seventh to give the Chargers a 16-15 lead.
 
* Fillman gave the Nittany Lions the lead in the eighth when he recorded his second two-run home of the game.  Fallers added an insurance run two batters later with a run scoring hit to make the score 18-16.
 
* In the bottom of the ninth, Stephan hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 18-18.  After a single by Bell, Evan hit a two-run homer of his own to give the Chargers a walk-off 20-18 victory.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Fallers finished 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI.  His third inning home run was his fourth of the doubleheader and his 12th of the season. Fallers currently leads the United East in homers.
 
* DiMario had a five-hit game as he finished 5-for-7 at the plate to go along with four runs and five RBI.  His five hits fell one short of the single game record of six set by McCarty (2022) and Joseph Rizzo (2018). DiMario's two home runs marked the first of the season for him.
 
* Fillman finished 3-for-6 with three runs and four RBI.  He also connected on two home runs and now has five on the year and 12 in his career.  Fillman is also inching closer to his 100th career hit.  After his five hits in today's doubleheader, Fillman is seven hits away from 100 as he now has 93 career hits.
 
* Incollingo crushed his sixth home run of the season with his fourth inning three-run homer.  He now has 13 home runs in his career. Incollingo finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI.
 
* Grandelli finished the game 4-for-6 with two runs, while Figueroa went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Witkowski hit two home runs as he finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Nick Colarossi went 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI, while Boles went 1-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 35th and 36th matchups between Abington and Lancaster Bible.  The Nittany Lions are now 27-9 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 as the Nittany Lions host Saint Elizabeth University in the team's final home regular season contest of the year.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
