Abington Clinches Postseason Berth with Sweep at Cairn

Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team officially clinched a spot in the upcoming United East Conference (UEC) Championships after sweeping Cairn University in the team's final conference doubleheader of the season on Tuesday afternoon at the Stillman Complex.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Highlanders 10-4 and 11-1.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 1-0 lead when sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz drove in senior Hailey Gamble with a base hit to left-center field.  Gamble led the inning with a single to center and went on to steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch before Antosiewicz scored her with a hit.
 
* The Nittany Lions increased their lead to 3-0 in the third after freshman Lainey Scotese delivered a two-run single with two outs in the inning. Abington added another two runs in the fourth to lead 5-0 thanks to a two-run single by Gamble.
 
* Cairn got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after run scoring doubles by Riley Curtis and Korina Feliciano. The Highlanders added another two runs in the fifth to make the score 5-4. 
 
* Abington responded in a big way in the sixth with a five-run inning to increase its lead to 10-4 and eventual final score. The Nittany Lions registered five hits in the frame, including a two-run double by junior Jill Thomas.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Gamble finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.
 
* Antosiewicz went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Thomas also had two hits in the game as she finished 2-for-3 2ith two runs and two RBI.
 
* Scotese led the team with three RBI as she went 1-for-3 at the plate.
 
* Senior Gretchen Yanss picked up her seventh win of the season as she went the distance holding the Highlanders to just three earned runs.  Yanss struck out 10 batters in the victory.
 
* For Cairn, Myiah Petroro went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington scored two runs in the first and blew the game wide open with a nine-run third inning as the Nittany Lions defeated the Highlanders, 11-1, in five innings.
 
* Freshman Jess Dinardo held Cairn to just one run in four innings of work to earn her third win of the season.  Dinardo finished the game with four strikeouts. 
 
* In the third, the Nittany Lions took advantage of four errors by the Cairn defense.  Scotese went 2-for-2 in the inning with a run scoring triple early in the frame and then had an RBI single in her second at-bat in the inning.  Antosiewicz recorded a two-run double for the team's other extra-base hit in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Scotese finished the game 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Antosiewicz also recorded two RBI as she went 1-for-3 with two runs as well.
 
* Freshman Morgan Craig went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI.
 
* Freshman Logan Riley reached base three times as she drew three walks.
 
* Sophomore Paula Casale pitched a scoreless fourth inning to close out the game.  Casale had a strikeout in her lone inning.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh and eighth match-ups between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-0 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up the regular season on Thursday, April 24 as the Nittany Lions travel to Arcadia University for a non-conference doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
