Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team defeated eighth-seeded Penn College, 4-0, in the United East Conference (UEC) Play-In round to advance to the First Round of the conference championships on Tuesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus. The Nittany Lions are now 9-6 overall this year marking the most victories in a season since winning eight matches in 2018-19.

How It Happened

* Abington earned the team point in doubles with ease.  Having already won third doubles by default, the second doubles team of juniors Soniyah Youngblood and Morgan Schaefer clinched the point with a 6-1 triumph over Eliza Welshans and Kathryn B.

* It didn't take long for Abington to seal the match victory in singles play.  The Nittany Lions earned team points at fifth and sixth doubles by forfeit to lead the match, 3-0.

* Youngblood sealed the match victory after winning her third singles match over Kathryn B in shutout fashion.  Youngblood took the contest in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

* Sophomore Laurie Flemming was on the verge of a shutout when the match was official.  She led Ellen Buckley at first singles by the scores of 6-0 and 5-0.

* Schaefer also had a large advantage over Welshans at fourth singles.  Schaefer took the first set, 6-0, and led the second set, 5-1, at the time the match became official.
