Abington Defeats Chargers; Advances to United East Semifinals

Landisville, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team will be heading to the United East Conference (UEC) semifinals after defeating sixth-seeded Lancaster Bible College, 4-0, in a First-Round match on Friday afternoon at Hempfield Rec Center. The third-seeded Nittany Lions will now face second-seeded St. Mary's College (Md.) in the semifinals on Tuesday, April 29 in St. Mary's City, Md.

How It Happened
 
* Abington earned the team point in doubles play after picking up victories at first and third doubles.  Sophomore Anton Labas and freshman Charlie Batman shutout Austin King and Andrew Kelly by the score of 6-0.  Sophomores Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta defeated Cameron Tripp and Josh Jarvis, 6-2, after trailing 2-1 in the match.  They went on to win five straight points to secure the victory.
 
* In singles action, Gu won his 10th match of the season to improve to 10-1 on the year at first singles.  He defeated Jarvis in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* Mangifesta made quick work against Tripp coming away with a shutout triumph at second singles winning 6-0, 6-0.  It also marked his 10th victory of the season in singles play.
 
* At third singles, Labas won in straight sets over Owen Mileham by the scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Labas trailed the second set, 4-3, before winning the next three points to take the set.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 16th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-6 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are appearing in the postseason for the 12th time since joining Division III. Abington is now 8-10 all-time in the United East Tournament (formerly NEAC).
 
Wins are Adding Up
Today's victory marked the 12th of the season for the Nittany Lions.  The 12 victories are the most in a season since the team won 13 back in 2012-13.  That year the Nittany Lions advanced to the NEAC Championship match against Rutgers-Camden.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 29 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's (Md.) in the United East semifinals.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
