Abington Splits with Seahawks to Close Out Season

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split its final United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the season at St. Mary's College on Sunday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest.  St. Mary's won the opener by the score of 14-4, while the Nittany Lions took game two, 11-9.  Abington wrapped up conference play at 9-7 and as a result earned the sixth seed in the upcoming United East Championships.  St. Mary's finished 11-6 and earned the third seed.  Both teams will face one another in the Second Round of the championship in a best of three series beginning on Friday, May 2, with the winner advancing to the final four double-elimination portion of the championship.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
*  Abington scored the game's first run in the top half of the first when senior Shane Fillman drove in junior Cory DiMario with a base hit to right field.  DiMario led the inning off with a double to left-center.
 
* St. Mary's quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning and then grabbed the lead with a run in the second.  Trevor Smith led the second inning off with a home run to center field to give the Seahawks a 2-1 lead.
 
* St. Mary's increased its lead to 5-1 with three runs in the fourth.  Cole Tarleton highlighted the inning with a two-run triple.
 
* Abington cut the lead to 5-4 with three runs in the sixth.  Senior Josh McGee drove in senior Gaetan Grandelli with a single to right-center and then three batters later junior Paul Figueroa and sophomore Gabe Marrero each drew bases loaded walks to force in runs.
 
* St. Mary's answered in the bottom of the sixth with six runs to take a commanding 11-4 lead.  Tarleton had another two-run hit increasing his RBI total for the game to five. 
 
* The Seahawks added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh which enforced the conference mercy rule as St. Mary's led 14-4 through seven innings. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* DiMario went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. 
 
* Marrero went 1-for-1 to go along with two walks and an RBI.  Figueroa also drew two walks in the game and also recorded an RBI.
 
* For St. Mary's, Tarleton went 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI.  George Berbakos also had four hits in the game as he went 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington struck first again in game two as the Nittany Lions sent three runners across to score in the inning.  McGee drove in two runs after Abington loaded the bases with a single up the middle.  Sophomore Donato Incollingo followed with base hit to score senior Jake Fallers.
 
* After St. Mary's scored a lone run in the bottom of the first, Abington answered in a big way with a five-run second inning.  Five different players drove in runs in the frame to increase the lead to 8-1.
 
* In the bottom of the second, St. Mary's responded with four runs to cut into the Abington lead at 8-5.  Eli Shafer had a two-run hit in the inning.
 
* The Abington offense remained hot in the third as the Nittany Lions scored three more runs to push their lead to 11-5.  After the first three batters reached base all three base runners advance, including Marrero who scored on a balk by the Seahawks' pitcher.  Three batters later, McGee drove in another two runs with his second hit of the game.
 
* St. Mary's cut into the lead with three runs in the fifth.  Layne Lesko drove in two of the three runs to make the score, 11-8.  The Seahawks added their final run of the game in the sixth to cut the lead to 11-9. 
 
* Freshman Mike Nasti pitched the final three innings holding the Seahawks' offense to just one hit as he picked up his first career save.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Fillman finished the game 4-for-5 and in the process recorded his 100th career hit in an Abington uniform.  He entered the doubleheader with 96 career hits and now has 101 after going 5-for-9 in the two games.  Fillman also scored three runs in the win.
 
* DiMario also had four hits in the game as he finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
 
* McGee drove in a career-high five runs as he went 2-for-4 with a walk.
 
* Incollingo also had multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
* Marrero scored twice in the game and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a walk.
 
* For the Seahawks, Lesko went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Shafer finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Avery Sims reached base four times with four walks.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th and 13th matchups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-6 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, May 2 as the Nittany Lions return to St. Mary's City, Md. to face the Seahawks in the Second Round of the United East Championships.  The best of three series begins on Friday with a doubleheader and the 'if necessary' game will be held on Saturday, May 3.  Game times are still to be determined.
