Abington Advances in United East Championships; Defeats Gators in Play-In

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team will be moving on in the United East Conference (UEC) Championships after defeating ninth-seeded Notre Dame of Maryland University, 5-4, in a Play-In game on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  With the victory, the eighth-seeded Nittany Lions advance to the Second Round to face top-seed Penn State Berks in a best of three series beginning on Friday, May 2 at Berks' Hintz Field.

How It Happened
 
* Tied 4-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, Abington scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run without a single hit in the inning.  Sophomore Ryley Albany and freshman Riley Logan began the inning with back-to-back walks.  Junior Emily Foxhill then pushed both runners over with a sacrifice bunt.  Senior Hailey Gamble followed with a walk to load the bases for sophomore Isabella Antosiewicz.  Antosiewicz reached on a fielder's choice on a fly ball that dropped between multiple players in very shallow right field.  Albany was able to score on the play to give Abington a 5-4 lead.
 
* In the bottom of the inning, senior Gretchen Yanss retired the Gators in order capped off with her third strikeout to close out the game. 
 
* Abington trailed early in the game, 1-0, however, grabbed its first lead in the bottom of the second after scoring a pair of runs.  Gamble recorded a run scoring triple, which tied the program's all-time mark.  She would later score on an infield hit by Yanss.
 
* The Gators regained the lead in the top-half of the fifth with two run scoring doubles highlighting the inning.  Julianna Leatherwood and Bethani Newbold each drove in a run with doubles as the Gators took a 4-2 lead.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth, the Nittany Lions responded with two runs to tie the game at 4-4.  Sophomore Lainey Scotese had a run scoring hit, while freshman Morgan Craig tied the game as she drove in freshman Celeste Chang on a ground-out to first.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Yanss picked up her eighth win of the season while also hitting a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
 
* Gamble went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Her lone hit was a run-scoring triple which tied the program record for most triples with former standout Breanna Lineman (2014-17).
 
* Antosiewicz reached base twice with a pair of walks as she also scored a run and recorded an RBI. 
 
* For the Gators, Leatherwood finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Newbold went 2-for-3 with an RBI.  Charlene Torres went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Notre Dame.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are making their 12th appearance in the United East Championships as the team has qualified for the postseason every year since 2013.  Abington is now 13-19 in the conference championships.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, May 2 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Berks in the Second Round of the United East Championships.  The best of three game series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday and if necessary, a third and decisive game on Saturday.
