Abington Drops Season Opener to Highlanders

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team fell short in its season opener against visiting Cairn University by the score of 3-0 in a non-conference match on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the opening set thanks to a pair of kills by junior Zayna Jamaladdin, however Cairn responded with seven unanswered points to take an 8-3 advantage.  The Highlanders maintained the lead the rest of the set and led by as many as 12 points after a kill by Anna Dow made the score 21-9. Cairn took the set, 25-16, after an ace by Belle Manthe clinched the set.
 
* In the second set Abington once again held an early lead at 7-2.  Jamaladdin along with junior Kayla Mason each had a pair of kills that fueled the Abington opening run.  The Highlanders chipped away at the lead and used a 6-1 run to tie the set at 8-8.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of three straight attack errors to lead 11-8, but the Highlanders eight of the next 10 points to lead 16-13.  Cairn never relinquished the lead and closed the set with three straight points to win 25-17.
 
* Cairn led the third set, 12-11, and pulled away with an 8-2 run to increase its advantage to 20-13.  Marah Lehman ended the run with three straight aces.  Abington cut the led to 20-16 before the Highlanders ended the match scoring the final five points to take the set, 25-16.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Jamaladdin, Mason and sophomore Ellie Van Otten each led the team with six kills. 
 
* Sophomore Fabiola Medina finished with a team-high seven digs.
 
* Freshman Ryenn Mamrosch totaled 18 assists and five digs in her collegiate debut.
 
* For Cairn, Lehman finished with a match-high 16 kills to go along with 10 digs and four aces.  Liliana Magazzu totaled a match-high 18 digs and four aces, while Dow led with 32 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-5 against the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday as the Nittany Lions host Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 11 a.m.
