Abington Holds Off Mighty Macs in Five Sets

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team went the distance with visiting Immaculata University as the Nittany Lions came away with a 3-2 victory in a five-set thriller on Saturday morning at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 6-5 in the fifth set, but a quick 3-0 run capped off by back-to-back aces from sophomore Olivia Juan gave the Nittany Lions an 8-6 lead.  The Mighty Macs tied the score at 8-8 before Abington grabbed the lead for good.  A kill by junior Zayna Jamaladdin followed by three straight aces by freshman Shelleece Genaille gave Abington a 12-8 lead.  The Nittany Lions added two more points off an error by the Mighty Macs and another kill by Jamaladdin.  Immaculata received a point off an Abington error to make the score 14-9.  Jamaladdin then came through with her 16th and final kill of the match to give Abington the 15-9 victory.
 
* Abington never trailed in the opening set after jumping out to a 9-2 lead.  As a team, the Nittany Lions registered 14 kills on 23 total attacks without making a single error in the set for a .609 attack percentage.  Sophomore Ellie Van Otten totaled seven kills in the opening set, including a stretch of four straight kills to give the Nittany Lions a 14-3 lead.  Abington closed out the set scoring the final nine points with Genaille recording four aces in the final run.
 
* After dropping the second set, 25-22, the Nittany Lions bounced back with a 25-14 triumph in the third set.  Abington broke a 12-12 tie with a 9-0 run that featured a pair of kills from Jamaladdin and two aces by junior Ryenn Mamrosch.  The Mighty Macs responded with back-to-back points, however Abington closed out the match scoring four straight points, including three points off Mighty Mac errors for the 25-14 win.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Jamaladdin finished with a match-high 16 kill; one shy of her career-high.  She also added four aces and two digs on the day.
 
* Van Otten also recorded double-digit kills as she finished with a career-high 11 kills. 
 
* Mamrosch paced the offense with a match-high 29 assists to go along with five aces and six digs.
 
* Sophomore Angel Morales led the match with 17 digs marking a new career-high.  Morales also recorded two aces.
 
* In her collegiate debut, Genaille recorded eight of the team's 21 aces. 
 
* Junior Brynn Atkins recorded three blocks, including two solo and one block assist. 
 
* For Immaculata, Emma Hodgson led the team with eighth kills, while Adriana Ventura finished with a team-high 17 digs. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-6 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series after winning the last three match-ups.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 2 as the Nittany Lions host Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
