How It Happened

* Abington trailed the match 2-1 and needed a victory in the fourth set to extend the match.  With the fourth set tied at 5-5, the Nittany Lions scored seven unanswered points to grab a 12-5 lead. Abington maintained the lead despite Rutgers-Newark coming within three points at 18-15.  The Nittany Lions followed by scoring five of the next six points to hold a 23-16 advantage. After a point by the Scarlet Raiders, the Nittany Lions received back-to-back kills from freshman Maya Giles and junior Zayna Jamaladdin to clinch the set, 25-17, and force a fifth and decisive set.

* In the fifth set, both teams battled back and forth early on but the Scarlet Raiders pulled ahead breaking a 5-5 tie with five straight points with three kills coming from Mia Espinoza.  However, the Nittany Lions answered with five unanswered points of their own to tie the set at 10-10.  Sophomore Fabiola Medina highlighted the run with a pair of kills.

* Both teams exchanged points and Abington then grabbed a 13-12 lead after back-to-back kills by junior Bryn Atkins.  The score became tied after an Abington attack error and then Rutgers-Newark regained the lead on an ace by Tracey Ilderis.  On the ensuing rally, the Scarlet Raiders clinched the set and ultimately the match with a borderline kill by Jaedyn Simba-Malasarte that just stayed inside the end line.
