Abington Downed by Roanoke After Late Scores

Salem, Va. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest at nationally ranked No. 23 Roanoke College by the score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.

How It Happened
 
* A penalty kick in the 81st minute turned out to be the difference in the game.  Roanoke's Ryan Pidgeon took the kick for the Maroons and converted to break the 0-0 tie. 
 
* Pidgeon added another score for the home team in the final minute to make the score 2-0.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Both teams finished close in shots with the Maroons holding a slight edge over the Nittany Lions, 12-10.  Abington had six on-goal including three in the opening half. Sophomore Kyle Sheridan fired a shot in the 41st minute that could have given the Nittany Lions the lead, but his shot was stopped by a Roanoke defender.
 
* Minutes before the Roanoke penalty kick, junior Hugh Nungessor had his shot stopped by goalkeeper Aidan McHugh to keep the shutout intact.  Nungessor finished the game with two shots on-goal.
 
* Senior Brendan Werner made five saves in net for the Nittany Lions as he now has 140 stops in his career. Werner had two big back-to-back saves late in the first half stopping two shots by Pidgeon in the 34th minute.
 
* Sophomore Frankie Rafferty and freshman Liame Attis each had two shots in the game.  Both of Rafferty's shots were on-target.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Roanoke since the 2017 season.  Abington is now 0-2-1 versus the Maroons in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24 as the Nittany Lions host New Jersey City University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Memorial Field.
