Abington Rolls Past Gators to Open United East Action

Abington, Pa. – Four players scored goals as the Penn State Abington men's soccer team cruised past Notre Dame of Maryland University, 4-0, in the United East Conference (UEC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the game's first goal early in the first half off a corner kick opportunity.  Sophomore Frank Monaco took the kick and freshman Shawn Dixon finished the play with his first collegiate goal.  Dixon's score gave Abington a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. 
 
* The Nittany Lions doubled its lead later in the half when freshman Liame Attis connected on his first goal of his career. Attis scored an unassisted goal to give Abington a 2-0 lead with 13 minutes remaining until halftime.
 
* In the second half, Abington put the game out of reach scoring another two goals.  Junior Hugh Nungessor scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the 59th minute to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 advantage.  Dixon, who scored in the first half, picked up his first career assist on the play.
 
* In the 78th minute, freshman Aramis Shire scored his second goal of the season to make the score 4-0.  Sophomore Frankie Rafferty assisted on the score for his third assist this year.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* The Abington defense limited the Gators to just three shots, including one in the second half.  It marked the fewest shots allowed this season by the Nittany Lions. 
 
* Offensively, the Nittany Lions ripped off 16 shots, including seven on-target in the game.  The team also produced nine corner kicks, all coming in the opening half.
 
* Senior goalkeeper Brendan Werner earned the win and shutout in net.  It marked his second straight clean slate and third of the season.
 
* Nungessor, who leads the team in goals with three, has scored in back-to-back games for the first time since his rookie season in 2023. 
 
* Rafferty has a team-high three assists now on the season with all three coming in the last two games.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Notre Dame.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's College (Md.) in a rematch of last year's United East championship game.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
