Abington Dominates Highlanders, 82-53

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team improved to 4-2 in the United East Conference (UEC) after defeating Cairn University, 82-53, on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  At halftime, the team presented junior Amirah Hackney with a commemorative basketball highlighting her recent 1,000 career point milestone on Jan. 7 against the University of Valley Forge.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 6-4 at the 6:51 mark of the opening quarter after Emily Brittin converted a pair of free throws for the Highlanders.  The Nittany Lions followed with a 21-2 run to close out the quarter and never looked back.  Sophomore Tarianda Washington scored seven points during the surge as the Nittany Lions led 25-8 entering the second quarter.
 
* In the second quarter, Abington scored the first seven points of the quarter to lead 32-8.  The Nittany Lions pushed their lead to as many as 33 points later in the quarter when Hackney scored a layup basket that made the score 46-13.  Abington entered halftime with a 48-20 advantage.
 
* Abington's lead swelled to 35 points early in the fourth quarter.  Senior Nia Newman knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 77-42.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior Nia Newman scored a career-high 28 points after shooting 10-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from deep range.  Newman was also a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.  She also grabbed seven rebounds and had a career-high seven steals on defense.
 
* Hackney recorded a double-double as she totaled 20 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.  She also added five assists and four steals.  It marked Hackney's second double-double of the season.
 
* Washington also recorded a double-double as she finished with 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds tying her career-high.  The double-double was the first of the season for Washington.
 
* Junior Amina Reid finished the night with 10 points and six steals.  Reid now has 242 career steals and trails former standout Shayna Rodriguez by three for the program's top mark.  Rodriguez recorded 245 career steals from 2015 to 2019.
 
* For Cairn, Dezaray Bright recorded a double-double with a team-high 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Brittin added 11 points and eight rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-1 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series and have won the last 10 matchups.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24 as the Nittany Lions host Cedar Crest College in a United East contest. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
