Abington Rallies to Defeat Wilson; Meinel Scores Game-Winner with Three Seconds Left

Chambersburg, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team outscored Wilson College, 18-6, the final six-plus minutes of regulation to overcome an 11-point deficit to defeat the Phoenix, 91-90, in the United East Conference (UEC) finale on Saturday afternoon at Gannett Field House. Sophomore Tyler Meinel scored what turned out to be the game-winning basket with three seconds left in the game.
 
With the victory, the Nittany Lions finished in a tie for sixth place with St. Mary's College (Md.) in the United East standings.  Due to the team's regular season victory over the Seahawks, Abington secured the sixth seed and will have a first-round bye.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed by as many as 12 points (62-50) at the 14:16 mark of the second half.  The Nittany Lions rallied and used a 16-4 run over a three-minute span to tie the game at 66-66.  Junior K'Mari Smith scored a layup basket to tie the game and cap the run. 
 
* Wilson answered with a run of its own and pushed its lead back to 12 points thanks to a 14-2 surge.  Wilson's Armani Jones made the score 80-68 with 8:31 to play after a fast-break dunk.
 
* The Nittany Lions, trailing by double-digits once more, had one more surge in them.  Trailing 84-73 with less than seven minutes to play in regulation, Abington went on to outscore the Phoenix, 18-6, the rest of the game to pull off the come from behind victory.
 
* Meinel hit a jumper after grabbing a key offensive board with three seconds left on the clock to give Abington its first and only lead of the game at 91-90.
 
* The Abington defense made a stop on the ensuing Wilson possession to secure the victory as a three-pointer by Jalen Pierce came up short as time expired.  
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior JoJo Kelly scored a game-high 35 points as he finished 13-of-21 shooting, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line.  He also grabbed six boards and dished out three assists.
 
* Junior Tyler Fox came away with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior Mike Byfield added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
 
* Smith totaled 10 points, eight boards and a team-best four assists in the win.
 
* Meinel finished with eight points (4-5 FG) and seven rebounds off the bench.
 
* For Wilson, Pierce scored a team-best 29 points, while Jalen Bowie recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2014-15 season and the first since 2017-18.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-4 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.  Today's win marked the first for Abington since 2016-17.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington will be returning to the United East Tournament after a two-year hiatus.  The Nittany Lions finished the season tied with St. Mary's at 6-7 in conference play but due to the team's regular season victory over the Seahawks, Abington will be granted the sixth seed and as a result a first round bye.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as the Nittany Lions travel to face third-seeded Cairn University in the United East quarterfinals.  Game time will be announced in the coming days.
