Tenth Straight Win Sends Abington to United East Semifinals

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team is headed back to the United East Conference (UEC) semifinals for the third straight season after defeating sixth-seeded Wilson College, 81-39, in the quarterfinal round on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building. The third-seeded Nittany Lions will now travel to face second-seeded Penn College in the semifinal round on Tuesday night.  The Wildcats defeated seventh-seeded Lancaster Bible College, 76-42, in their quarterfinal matchup.

How It Happened

* After a layup score by Wilson's Chelcie Forrester cut the Abington lead to 13-10, the Nittany Lions followed with 11-unanswered points to take a commanding 24-10 lead minutes into the second quarter.  The Abington lead never dipped below 10 points the rest of the game as the third-seeded Nittany Lions closed out the quarter with a 10-0 run before Wilson scored a basket in the closing seconds of the half.  Abington led 37-16 heading into halftime.
 
* In the second half, the Abington offense continued where it left off the previous quarter. The Nittany Lions scored a game-high 27 points in the frame and once again limited the Phoenix to just eight points for the third straight quarter.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Sophomore Tarianda Washington recorded her third double-double of the season as she finished the game with 13 points and a game-high 14 boards.  She also had three steals on defense.
 
* Junior Amirah Hackney led all scorers with 19 points and totaled a game-high four steals.
 
* Junior Amina Reid totaled 10 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Reid also finished the game with a pair of steals on defense, tying her career-high single season-program record with 91.
 
* Senior Nia Newman added 10 points and six rebounds, while senior Naila Newman totaled eight points and seven boards.
 
* Sophomore Tramiya Batts grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds.
 
* For Wilson, Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Jewels Torres scored a team-high 13 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 17th meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 15-2 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series after winning that last 15 contests.
 
Streaking Lions
Abington won its 10th straight game setting a new program record for most consecutive victories in the team's Division III era.  The previous mark of nine straight was held by the 2014-15 team that went on to win the NEAC Championship.
 
Abington in the Postseason
Abington is appearing in its eighth United East tournament and is now 9-7 all-time, including 6-2 in the quarterfinal round.  The Nittany Lions are advancing to the semifinals for the third straight season and sixth time overall.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 24 with a trip to Williamsport, Pa. in the works.  The Nittany Lions will take on the Wildcats in the conference semifinals.  Game time is still to be determined.
