Byfield Nets 1,000th Career Point at Berks

Reading, Pa. – Penn State Abington junior Mike Byfield recorded his 1,000th career point as the men's basketball team faced off against Penn State Berks in a United East Conference (UEC) contest on Wednesday night at the Beaver Athletics & Wellness Center.  Berks defeated Abington, 94-81.

How It Happened
 
* Berks jumped out to an 11-2 lead through the first four-plus minutes of the game, before Abington rallied and answered with a 14-5 surge to tie the game.  Junior Tyler Fox drained a three-pointer midway through the half to knot things up at 16-16.
 
* Berks quickly broke the tie on its next possession with a three of its own from Peter Cavacini as the home team grabbed a 19-16 advantage.  Berks went on to lead 43-34 at the half.
 
* Abington opened the second half with a three-pointer by Byfield who finished the game with a season-high 23 points.  Byfield's three cut the lead to 43-37.  However, Berks followed with six straight points to increase its lead to 49-37 at the 16:38 mark. 
 
* Berks' lead swelled to as many as 19 points twice later in the half.  A layup by Zach Prator with 6:26 remaining in regulation pushed the lead to 75-56. Berks maintained its double-digit lead the remaineder of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Byfield entered the game 23 points shy of his 1,000th career point and finished with exactly 23 to reach the milestone.  Byfield recorded career points 999 and 1,000 with a layup basket at the 3:45 mark of the fourth quarter.  He is the second player this season to reach the 1,000 career point milestone joining teammate JoJo Kelly who did so back in November. Byfield also totaled nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
 
* Junior K'Mari Smith led all scorers with a game-high 28 points as he shot 11-of-18 from the field.  Smith also totaled eight rebounds and registered a pair of steals on defense.
 
* Sophomore Tyler Meinel recorded his third double-double of the season as he finished with 11 points and a team-high 10 boards.
 
* Fox finished the game with 12 points after draining three three-pointers.
 
* For Berks, Zach Prator totaled a team-high 25 points (11-18 FG), while Marquis Ferreira recorded 21 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 25th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 15-10 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7 as the Nittany Lions host Gallaudet University in a United East contest.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.  Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions will honor Kelly who is competing in his final home regular season contest in part of Senior Day festivities.
