Kelly Scores School Record 47 Points in Win Over Gallaudet

Abington, Pa. – Penn State Abington senior JoJo Kelly shined on Senior Day as he finished with a school record 47 points in the team's 102-78 victory over Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Gallaudet came within one point of tying the score which at the time was a tightly contested contest.  The Bison's Keanu Boren hit a jumper to make the score 21-20 with 7:50 left in the first half.  Abington responded when Kelly knocked down a three which jumpstarted a quick 9-0 run by the Nittany Lions.  Abington pushed its lead to double-digits for the first time when junior K'Mari Smith capped the run with a fast-break basket after forcing a turnover on defense.  Smith's basket gave the Nittany Lions a 30-20 lead with 5:54 left until halftime.
 
* Abington increased its lead to as many as 14 points in the half when Kelly scored a basket to make the score 38-24 with 3:30 left on the clock.  The Nittany Lions finished the half with a 45-32 advantage.
 
* In the second half, Gallaudet chipped away at the Abington lead made it a two-possession game at the 12:25 mark.  A layup basket by Alex Ortman made the score 60-55.
 
* Abington responded with a 9-2 run as the Nittany Lions pushed their lead back to double-figures.  A pair of free throws by Kelly made the score 69-57 with less than 10 minutes to play.  The Abington lead never dipped below double-digits the rest of the way with the team's largest lead of the game coming in the final minutes.  Junior Tyler Fox knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 97-68.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Kelly's 47-point performance set a new single game record breaking a 10-year mark by former standout Dequan Jackson who scored 40 points at Wells College on Jan. 17, 2016.  Kelly also broke Jackson's single game record for most field goals in a game after shooting 17-of-31 from the field.  Jackson drained 16 field goals during his 40-point outburst. In addition, Kelly's 47 points are the most scored by any player in the United East this year and is the seventh most scored points in all of Division III this season.
 
* Fox finished the game with 22 points (8-14 FG) after draining 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.  He also had four boards and two steals on defense.
 
* Junior Mike Byfield, fresh off his 1,000-career point milestone, totaled 16 points in the win to go along with a team-best eight rebounds.  Byfield also dished out four assists.
 
* Junior Jamze Johnson scored a season-high eight points off the bench with a pair of three-pointers.
 
* For Gallaudet, Alex Ortman led the team with 29 points (11-17 FG), while Jory Valencia and Boren each added 13 points.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 28th meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 14-14 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Keystone College in United East action.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
