Abington Dominates Gallaudet in United East Action

Abington, Pa. –  The Penn State Abington women's basketball team won its seventh straight game after defeating Gallaudet University, 91-33, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.  The win improves the Nittany Lions' conference record to 9-2 as the team sits in third place with two games remaining on the schedule.

How It Happened
 
* The turning point came early in the second quarter after Gallaudet cut the lead to 17-16 in the first minute of the frame.  Abington answered with eight straight points to push its lead to nine after junior Amirah Hackney knocked down a three to make the score 25-16. The Nittany Lions went on to enhance their lead to as many as 17 points by the end of the half with a 39-22 advantage.
 
* In the third quarter, Abington led 46-26 at the 7:42 mark and went on a 23-0 run over the next six-plus minutes to swell its lead to 43 points at 69-26.  The Nittany Lions outscored the Bison, 32-7, in the quarter. 
 
* After allowing 14 points in the first quarter, the Abington defense held the Bison to just 19 points in the final 30 minutes of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Senior Nia Newman recorded her third double-double of the season after scoring a game-high 25 points to go along with a game-high 13 rebounds.  Newman drained five three-pointers in the win and had four steals on defense.
 
* Senior Naila Newman also recorded a 20-plus point performance as she totaled 22 points setting a new season-high. She also filled the box score with a game-high nine assists, five rebounds and three steals.
 
* Hackney finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Tramiya Batts added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
 
* Sophomore Tarianda Washington grabbed 11 rebounds.
 
* For Gallaudet, Kayla Debrow recorded a double-doubled with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 31st meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011-12 season. The Nittany Lions are now 11-20 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 10 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Keystone College in a United East contest.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
