Abington Shuts Out Hazleton, 12-0

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Sophomore Christopher Raimonda and freshman Matt Avery combined for a shutout victory as the Penn State Abington baseball team defeated Penn State Hazleton, 12-0, in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Genuardi Legends Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington wasted zero time lighting up the scoreboard as the Nittany Lions had three runners score in the opening inning.  Freshman John Busco highlighted the inning with a two-run hit. 
 
* Abington increased its lead to 5-0 in the second after junior Akira Nakamura doubled to center field to score two runs.  It marked his third RBI in the first two innings as he went on to drive in another three later in the game.
 
* In the fourth, Abington pushed across three more runs on three consecutive at-bats.  Junior Nathan Schurga, sophomore Aqual Chapman and Nakamura all drove in runs in the inning.
 
* The Abington offense erupted for four runs in the fifth to cap the scoring in the game.  Nakamura closed the inning with a two-run single.  Schurga and senior Garrett Garofalo also drove in runs in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Raimonda picked up his first victory of the season as he went five innings holding Hazleton to just three hits.  He finished with three strikeouts.
 
* Avery made his first collegiate appearance pitching two innings of scoreless relief.  He struck out two batters and allowed only two hits.
 
* Nakamura had a career day as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBI. 
 
* Schurga also had three hits in the game after going 3-for-3 with a walk.  He drove in a pair of runs and scored three times.
 
* Freshman Jaxon Horvath finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
* For Hazleton, Cooper Ansbach went 2-for-3 in the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Hazleton in the team's Division III era.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 3 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Rutgers University – Camden in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
