Abington Wins Two at Spring Games

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team won its fifth straight game after picking up another pair of non-conference victories on Thursday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.  The Nittany Lions defeated Mitchell College, 10-9, in extra innings and then run-ruled SUNY Canton, 16-2, in six innings.

How It Happened (vs. Mitchell)
 
* Junior Lainey Scotese gave Abington a 1-0 lead with a first inning run scoring hit.  She then drove in another run in the third to jump start a three-run inning.  Senior Jill Thomas capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run base hit to make it a 4-0 game.
 
* In the fourth, the Mitchell offense tied the game with a four-run inning.  Brooke Clancy drove in a pair of runs in the inning with a double and later scored.
 
* The game didn't remain tied for long as the Nittany Lions answered with three runs in the top half of the fifth.  Junior Marlena Hacker drove in a run and later scored on a foul out by Thomas.
 
* Abington tacked on another run in the top half of the seventh when Scotese hit an inside the park home run for her first home run of the season.  It gave the Nittany Lions an 8-4 lead.
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, Scotese's run came up big as Mitchell tallied four runs to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings.
 
* Abington scored twice in the extra frame with freshman Candice Peck driving in the go-ahead run with a double to left-center field.  Peck would then score on a Mitchell throwing error to give the Nittany Lions a 10-8 lead.
 
* Mitchell didn't go away easily as the Mariners scored early in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-9 game.  With two runners on, including a runner in scoring position, and two outs, sophomore Jess Dinardo entered in relief and struck out Cassandra Roman for the final out to secure the one-run victory.

* Scotese finished the game 4-for-5 at the plate to go along with three runs and three RBI, including her first home run of the season with the inside the park homer.
 
* Peck scored three times after going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
 
* Hacker went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Thomas finished 1-for-4 with two RBI.
 
* Freshman Sydney Schrager (2-0) earned her second win of the season after pitching 2.2 innings of relief.
 
* For Mitchell, Brooke Clancy finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Olivia DeCicco went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Mitchell.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-0 versus the Mariners.  Abington won last year's contest in Myrtle Beach, 4-3.
 
How It Happened (vs. SUNY Canton)
 
* Back-to-back run scoring hits by Hacker and Scotese gave Abington a 2-0 lead after the top half of the first inning.  Canton answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning after Bridgette Fox doubled in a run.
 
* Leading 2-1, the Nittany Lions added another pair of runs in the second to increase its advantage to 4-1. Junior Isabella Antosiewicz drove in senior Emily Foxhill with a sacrifice fly before Hacker followed with her second run scoring hit of the game to drive in Peck who earlier singled in the inning.
 
* Two innings later, the Abington offense doubled its lead with a four-run fourth inning.  Freshman Tori Colagreco, Thomas and sophomore Morgan Craig recorded back-to-back-to-back run scoring hits as the Nittany Lions increased the lead to 8-1.
 
* In the sixth, Abington doubled its lead once more with an impressive eight-run frame.  The Nittany Lions sent 12 batters to the plate and recorded seven hits in the inning. Six different batters drove in runs, including a two-run triple by Schrager for her first collegiate hit.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. SUNY Canton)
 
* Thomas finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI.  She also pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief with a one strike out in the inning.
 
* Craig went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Hacker finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Dinardo (2-0) picked up her second win of the season after going five innings and allowing just two runs.  She finished the game with five strikeouts.
 
* For Canton, Cassandra Forrest went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Madelin Marquart finished 2-for-3.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Canton and the first since 2013. The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Kangaroos.
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up its spring trip with a pair of non-conference contests on Friday.  The Nittany Lions will face Lycoming College (9 a.m.) and then take on Vermont State University Castleton (11 a.m.).
