Abington Splits on Final Day of Spring Trip

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a pair of non-conference contests as the team wrapped up their annual spring trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic down in Myrtle Beach S.C. on Friday.  The Nittany Lions dropped their matchup against Lycoming College, 11-2, before ending the day on a high note with a 1-0 triumph over Vermont State University Castleton.  Abington finished the trip with a 6-2 record marking the most victories while down in Myrtle Beach.

How It Happened (vs. Lycoming)
 
* Lycoming scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning and that was more than enough for starting pitcher Sage Smeltz, who held Abington to just two runs, to earn her third win of the season. The Warriors record four straight run scoring hits and took advantage of two errors in the inning.
 
* Lycoming added a run in the third to make it a 6-0 game before Abington plated a pair of runs in the fourth.  Freshman Marisa Maehrer drove in a run with a base hit and was followed by senior Emily Foxhill with a sacrifice fly for the team's second run.
 
* In the bottom of the fourth the Warriors recorded their second five-run inning of the game to increase the lead to 11-2.  Four different players drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Kendall McAnelly closed the game out for the Warriors pitching a scoreless fifth inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. Lycoming)
 
* Senior Jill Thomas and junior Marlena Hacker each had multiple hits in the game.  Thomas finished 2-for-2 with a double, while Hacker went 2-for-3.
 
* For Lycoming, Isabelle Engel went 3-for-3 with two runs, while Claire Alexander finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Lycoming and the first since the 2020 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-2 versus the Warriors in the all-time series.
 
How It Happened (vs. Castleton)
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo went the distance against the Spartans and held them scoreless for her first career shutout.  Dinardo limited Castleton to just four hits while striking out six batters tying her career-high.
 
* Abington scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the third as the Nittany Lions manufactured the run playing small ball.  Foxhill led the inning off with a walk and then moved on to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by freshman Candice Peck.  Foxhill then stole third and junior Isabella Antosiewicz scored her with a sacrifice fly to right field.
 
* Castleton had opporunties to tie the game in the fourth and sixth innings when Alex Brouillette reach base on a pair of doubles.  However, each time Dinardo was able to get out of the inning unscathed with the shutout intact.
 
* In the top half of the seventh, Dinardo closed things out retiring the Spartans in order to secure her third victory of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. Castleton)
 
* Antosiewicz, junior Lainey Scotese and sophomore Riley Logan all had hits for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Dinardo improved to 3-0 on the year with her complete game performance.  It marked her first career shutout. 
 
* For Castleton, Brouillette went 2-for-3 with two doubles.  Anna Winter (0-1) went six full innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out two.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Castleton.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 17 as the Nittany Lions host Delaware Valley University in the team's home opener at Huntingdon Field.  Game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
