Abington Splits with Cairn in Return North

Langhorne, Pa. – In the team's first contest since returning from Myrtle Beach, the Penn State Abington softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Cairn University on Saturday afternoon at Stillman Complex Softball Diamond.

How It Happened (Game 1)

* Abington sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening inning and pushed six runs across to take a commanding 6-0.  The Nittany Lions recorded eight hits in the inning, including two by freshman Candice Peck.  Freshman Tori Colagreco and senior Emily Foxhill each drove in a pair of runs in the frame.
 
* Cairn scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Abington answered with two in the second to increase its lead to 8-2.  Colagreco connected on her second run scoring double of the game and then scored on a ground out by senior Jill Thomas.
 
* The Highlanders added a run in the third to make it an 8-2 game.  The score remained that way until the bottom of the sixth.  Cairn rallied and scored six runs in the inning to tie the game at 8-8.  The Highlanders scored five of the six runs with two outs in the inning.  Marah Lehman capped the inning with a two-run double that tied the score.
 
* After a scoreless top of the seventh, the Highlanders got a leadoff single by Aerynne Mays to start the bottom of the frame.  Korina Feliciano followed with a double as Mays advanced to third.  Molly Williams then drove in Mays with a base hit to walk-off game one with a one-run victory.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
*  Colagreco and Peck each had three hits in the game.  Colagreco finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI.  Peck went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Foxhill finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk.
 
* Junior Lainey Scotese also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
* For Cairn, Feliciano went 4-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Lehman went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington once again jumped out to an early lead with another big opening frame.  The Nittany Lions scored five runs and took advantage of three walks in the inning.  Scotese and freshman Marisa Maehrer each drove in a pair of runs in the inning. Junior Marlena Hacker also had a run scoring hit as she drove in the game's first run.
 
* Abington pushed its lead to 7-0 with a pair of runs in the second.  Thomas drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run and junior Rylee Albany followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Hacker from third.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored a single run in the third and another two runs in the fourth to grab a 10-0 lead.  Foxhill scored on a wild pitch in the third and then drove in a run in the fourth.  Sophomore Riley Logan also had a run scoring hit in the inning.
 
* Cairn finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Feliciano run scoring single.  Abington responded in the fifth with two more runs to make the score, 12-1.  Colagreco and Thomas each recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies to drive in runs.
 
* The Highlanders almost extended the game in the bottom of the fifth.  The home team pushed across three runs, including a two-run triple by Myiah Petroro to make the score 12-4.  However, the Nittany Lions were able to get out of the inning without any further damage as the eight-run mercy rule went into effect.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Thomas reached base three times as she went 1-for-1 with two walks.  She scored a run and drove in two. 
 
* Scotese (1-for-3) and Maehrer (1-for-2) each drove in a pair of runs.
 
* Albany went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Hacker scored three times in the game after going 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks.
 
* Junior Isabella Antosiewicz also scored three times as she finished 2-for-4.
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo (4-0) picked up her fourth win of the season as she went 4.1 innings.  Dinardo tied her career and season-high with six strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.
 
* For the Cairn, Jessica Tracey went 2-for-2 with a run, while Aerynne Mays finished 2-for-3 with a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth and tenth matchups between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-1 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 24 as the Nittany Lions host Immaculata University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2:30 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
