Abington Drops Home Opener to Mighty Macs

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped its home opener to Immaculata University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Huntington Field. The Mighty Macs defeated the Nittany Lions by the scores of 12-1 and 9-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington tied the game in the bottom of the first after Immaculata jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the top half of the frame.  Junior Lainey Scotese drove in fellow junior Isabella Antosiewicz with a double to center field. Antosiewicz drew a walk to reach base.
 
* The Mighty Macs broke the 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning.  Alexis Andrada highlighted the inning with a two-run double.  Immaculata added another three runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 7-1.  Carlee Karcher and Andrada recorded back-to-back run scoring triples in the inning.
 
* Immaculata capped the scoring with five runs in the fifth to push its lead to 12-1.  Andrada recorded another run scoring hit for her fifth RBI of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Scotese and sophomore Riley Logan each went 1-for-2 in the game accounting for both Abington hits.
 
* For the Mighty Macs, Andrada went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and five RBI.  Sara Pierson (2-4) earned the win with a five-inning complete game performance.  Pierson struck out five and held Abington to one run.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Immaculata opened the scoring with a four-run second inning.  Four different players drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Abington got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after a sacrifice fly by freshman Tori Colagreco that score Scotese who led the inning off with a walk. After a scoreless fifth, the Nittany Lions made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth.  Abington cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the inning.  Senior Emily Foxhill and Logan connected on back-to-back run scoring hits with two outs in the inning.
 
* In the seventh, Immaculata made things more difficult for the Nittany Lions with five runs coming across to increase the lead to 9-3.  Karcher highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Colagreco finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Riley also had a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
* For the Mighty Macs, Karcher went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh and eighth matchups between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-6 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, March 26 as the Nittany Lions host Widener University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
