Abington Splits with Widener; Walks-Off Game One

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Widener University on Thursday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions won the opener with a 6-5 walk-off victory after a two-run double by sophomore Riley Logan drove in the tying and game-winning runs.  Widener took the nightcap by the score of 11-6 after the game was called after five innings due to darkness.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington trailed 5-3 with just three outs remaining in the game.  Freshman Candice Peck led the seventh off with a single up the middle and two batters later senior Jill Thomas singled through the left side to put runners at the corners.  Sophomore Morgan Craig reached base on a fielding blunder by the Widener shortstop to load the bases.  Junior Rylee Albany entered as a pinch hitter and drove in Peck with a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 5-4.  Sophomore Riley Logan then drove a pitch over the head of the centerfielder to score pinch-runner, Ella McDonough, and Craig to give Abington the walk-off victory.
 
* Widener opened the scoring in the game with a four-run second inning after taking advantage of two fielding errors in the frame.  Elizabeth Carney highlighted the inning with a two-run double. The Pride added another run in the fifth to increase its lead to 5-0. 
 
* Abington answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to cut the deficit to 5-3.  Peck drove in a pair of runs with a triple to left and then scored on a base hit by freshman Tori Colagreco.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
*  Logan reached base three times as she went 1-for-3 with the clutch walk-off double.  She finished with two RBI and drew two walks.
 
* Peck went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and three RBI.  She also reached base with a walk.
 
* Senior Emily Foxhill went 2-for-3 in the game.
 
* Freshman Sydney Schrager (3-1) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief.  Schrager didn't allow a single batter reached base in her appearance.
 
* For Widener, Carney went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Taylor Bell finished 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Pride scored two first inning runs to take an early 2-0 lead. Jocelin Mayorga had a run scoring double and pinch-runner, Katherine Lippincott, later scored on a double-steal home.
 
* Abington got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-1 after Logan scored on a wild pitch. She led the inning off with a base hit to left.
 
* The score remained 2-1 until the third when Widener scored four runs to increase its lead to 6-1.  The Pride added another two in the fourth and three in the fifth to lead 11-2. 
 
* In the bottom of the fifth Abington put together a two-out rally.  After the first two batters were retired, junior Marlena Hacker reached with a double down the left field line.  Junior Lainey Scotese was then hit by a pitch and Peck reached on a field error that scored Hacker.  Colagreco followed with a double to drive in sophomore Celeste Chang, who pinch-ran for Scotese, and Peck to make the score 11-5.  Colagreco advanced to third and then scored on two separate wild pitches. 
 
* At the end of the fifth, the Pride held an 11-6 advantage over the Nittany Lions.  However, due to darkness the game was called and set as official with five completed innings in the books.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Hacker finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
 
* Colagreco also had a double as she went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.

* Foxhill went 1-for-2 with a run and a double.
 
* For Widener, Mia Ferraro Katelyn Tong each finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Hailey Hernandez drew three walks in the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth and sixth matchups between Abington and Widener since the start of the 2018 season and the first since 2019.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-5 versus the Pride in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 28 as the Nittany Lions host Wilson College in a United East Conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2 p.m.
