Abington Drops Conference Match to Highlanders

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team dropped a United East Conference contest to visiting Cairn University by the score of 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Cairn earned the team point in doubles after winning first and second competitions.  The Nittany Lions won third doubles by the score of 7-5.  The team of sophomore Mia Hammoudi and Alyssa Thompson rallied from 3-0 down to tie the match at 5-5.  They broke serve and held their own for the 7-5 victory.
 
* Abington's two team points came with victories at fifth and sixth singles.  Thompson won her fifth singles match over Dana Brimacombe in three sets.  She won the first set, 6-4, but Brimacombe rallied to take set two by the score of 6-3 to force a 10-point tie-break set.  Thompson only trailed 1-0 in the tie-break and took control with three straight points midway to go from 4-3 to 7-3 before winning the tie-break, 10-6.
 
* At sixth singles, Hammoudi forced a 10-point third set tiebreak after winning the second set 6-3 against Amanda Pamligan.  Pamligan took the opening set by the score of 6-2.  In the tiebreak, Hammoudi led 6-1 and went on to win the set, 10-5.

* Cairn won team points at first, second, third and fourth singles. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittay Lions are now 5-7 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 28 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Harrisburg in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
