Abington Drops United East Opener to Wilson

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped its United East Conference (UEC) opener to visiting Wilson College by the scores of 9-1 and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Wilson scored the game's first runs in the second as the Phoenix plated three runs in the inning.  Samantha Rybacki drove in two with a two-out triple to center and then scored on a base hit by Jenna Weaver.  Wilson added two more runs in the third to increase its lead to 5-0.
 
* Abington got on the board in the bottom of the third after back-to-back two-out doubles by juniors Marlena Hacker and Lainey Scotese to make the score 5-1.
 
* In the fourth, Wilson answered with a pair of runs after Sydney Hartle's two-out two-run single down the left field line.  The Phoenix scored another two runs in the fifth when Addison Woods connected on a two-run home run. 
 
* Wilson's Elena Worthington (3-2) retired the Nittany Lions in order in the fifth as the universal eight-run mercy rule went into effect.  Worthington held Abington to just two hits and one run while striking out four.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Hacker and Scotese accounted for both Abington hits after each going 1-for-2 at the plate.
 
* For Wilson, Hartle went 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Woods finished 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, Wilson scored an early first inning run after Hartle recorded her first of three RBI in the game.  Abington answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own to take a 2-1 lead.  Hacker connected on a run scoring triple and scored two batters later on a base hit by freshman Tori Colagreco.
 
* Wilson regained the lead in the top half of the second with a pair of runs.  Woods recorded a run scoring triple and then scored on a double by Jenna Weaver.  Once again, the Nittany Lions responded in the bottom of the inning.  Junior Isabella Antosiewicz tied the game at 3-3 after scoring sophomore Morgan Craig with a fielder's choice to first base.  Craig led the inning off with a double.
 
* The score remained tied until the fifth when Wilson scored two runs to make it a 5-3 game.  Hartle doubled in a run while Samantha Rybacki scored a run with a sacrifice fly.  The Phoenix scored another run in the sixth with Hartle recording her second run scoring double in as many innings.
 
* Abington had a chance to cut the deficit down in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with two outs in the inning. However, the Nittany Lions were unable to get a run across as the score remained 6-3 heading to the seventh.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Hacker went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.  Her second inning triple marked her third of the season and 13th of her career. She now ranks second all-time trailing only Breanna Lineman (2014-17) and Hailey Gamble (2022-25) for most triples in program history.
 
* Craig went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo went the distance in the pitching circle.  She finished her outing with six strikeouts tying her career and season-high for the third time this season.
 
* For Wilson, Hartle finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Julia Wilkes (4-1) earned the win as she allowed two unearned runs in seven innings.  She struck out six batters.   
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 33rd and 34th matchups between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 12-22 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Brandywine in a United East doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
