Abington Pours it on Late Against Mighty Macs

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team won its fifth straight game and seventh in its last eight contests with a 21-9 victory over Immaculata University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.  The game was called in the bottom of the eighth after the 10-run mercy rule went into effect.

How It Happened
 
* Abington broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth after scoring three runs in the inning.  Junior Donato Incollingo led the inning off with a walk and later scored on a throwing error.  As the inning progressed, the Nittany Lions had runners at the corners with one out.  Senior Benjamin Gagnon dropped down a sacrifice bunt that scored freshman Jaxon Horvath. Junior Nathan Schurga than drove a pitch to right-center field for a run scoring double to give Abington a 4-1 lead.
 
* The Nittany Lions added a run in the fifth to make the score 5-1.  Junior Akira Nakamura, who led the inning off with a base hit, scored on a single to right-center by Horvath.
 
* In the top half of the sixth, the Mighty Macs answered with five runs to take their first lead of the game at 6-5.  Matt Passerini highlighted the inning with a three-run double and then scored on a double by Robert Woodward.
 
* The Abington offense answered back big in the bottom of the sixth matching the Mighty Macs and raising them two runs.  The Nittany Lions batted around in the frame and score seven runs to take a 12-6 lead.  Gagnon and Schurga recorded back-to-back two-run singles to cap the scoring in the inning.  Schurga went 2-for-2 with a pair of base hits in the inning.
 
* In the seventh, Immaculata added two runs after a two-run double by Nick Turnage.  Abington in turn scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a six-run game again at 14-8.  Horvath and junior Andrew Holt each drove in a run in the inning.
 
* In the bottom of the eighth the Nittany Lions 'walked-off' with a victory after scoring seven runs to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect.  Freshman John Busco recorded his team-leading seventh home run of the season with a three-run home run.  Later in the inning Horvath recorded his third RBI of the game with a run scoring hit.  Two batters later, sophomore John Marcucci blasted a three-run homer to push the score to 21-9.  It marked his first home run in an Abington uniform.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* The Abington lineup had seven players register multiple hits in the game with five driving in three or more runs.  Schurga led the way with a four-hit performance as he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI.
 
* Busco, who connected on his seventh home run of the season, went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
 
* Horvath finished the game 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI.
 
* Marcucci led the team with a season-high four RBI as he finished 1-for-3 at the plate with three runs and two walks.  Marcucci has seven RBI in his last two games.
 
* Gagnon went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three RBI.
 
* Nakamura finished 2-for-6 with two runs and an RBI, while junior Zach Bauers went 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.  Holt also had multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Junior Derek Aub didn't factor in the decision but gave Abington five strong innings allowing one earned run on just four hits.  Aub struck out four batters.
 
* For Immaculata, Passerini finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Turnage went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-6 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 1 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Notre Dame of Maryland University in a United East Conference contest.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
