Abington Clinches Postseason Berth with Win at Brandywine

Media, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team is returning to the United East Conference (UEC) tournament for the second straight season after defeating Penn State Brandywine, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Courts. The Nittany Lions improve to 3-2 in conference play and are currently tied for third place with Penn College with two conference matches remaining on the schedule.

How It Happened

* Abington earned the team point in doubles after winning at first and third flight.  At first singles, senior Mark Tymchenko and freshman Daniel Trott won with ease against Elias Danesh and Mateo Torres by the score of 6-2.  At third doubles, the team of sophomore Joseph Mouendi and freshman Kaan Ofluoglu cruised to a 6-1 victory over Adib Rahman and Patrick McGuire.
 
* In singles action, Mouendi recorded his first collegiate singles victory as he shut out Joe Pretti by the scores of 6-0, 6-0 at sixth flight.
 
* At fourth singles, freshman Sanat Juneja nearly pulled the shutout against Aaron Wilson as he won his match in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* Trott grabbed the win at first singles as he defeated Danesh in straight sets by the scores of 6-0, 6-3.
 
* Tymchenko won his third singles match against Zairus Silverio.  He won the first set, 6-0, and took the second set by the score of 6-2.
 
* Ofluoglu picked up the win at fifth singles defeating McGuire in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
 
* Brandywine's Torres recorded the team's lone point with a victory at second singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Brandywine since the start of the 2018-19 season.  Abington is now 5-2 versus Brandywine in the all-time series after winning most matches this season, including a non-conference match earlier in the fall.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 14 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in the team's final home contest of the season.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.
