Abington Wraps Up Regular Season at St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team completed the regular season with its final United East Conference (UEC) match of the year at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Saturday afternoon at Somerset Tennis Complex.  The Seahawks defeated the Nittany Lions by the score of 6-1.

Abington will now shift gears and prepare for the postseason as the Nittany Lions clinched the fifth seed in the coming conference tournament.  Abington, seeded fifth, will face fourth-seeded Penn State Berks in the quarterfinals a week from today.

How It Happened

* At first doubles, senior Mark Tymchenko and freshman Daniel Trott picked up the win over Alex Lyman and Jacob Nelson by the score of 7-5.  The Abington duo led early in the match, 4-1 and then again at 5-3 before Lyman and Nelson tied the score at 5-5.  Tymchenko and Trott broke St. Mary's serve and held on to score the next two points to take the match.

* St. Mary's earned the team point at doubles after winning second and third doubles by identical 6-1 scores.

* Freshman Kaan Ofluoglu got the lone team point for Abington with his fifth singles victory over Joey Carson.  Ofluoglu cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set before Carson rebounded and took the second set, 6-4.  In the 10-point tiebreak, Ofluoglu trailed 5-1 before winning seven straight points to take an 8-5 lead.  He went on to win the tiebreak, 10-6, to clinch the match.
