Abington Dominates Patriots to Close Out United East Play

Phoenixville, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team outscored the University of Valley Forge, 27-1, in the United East Conference (UEC) finale on Friday evening at the Valley Forge Softball Field.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Patriots by the scores of 13-0 and 14-1 with both games ending after five innings. Abington already clinched a spot in the United East Tournament and concludes conference play with a 7-9 record.  The Nittany Lions currently sit tied for seventh in the United East standings.  Pairs for the upcoming United East tournament will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season later this weekend.

How It Happened (Game 1)

*  Abington wasted zero time lighting up the scoreboard as the Nittany Lions scored four runs in the opening inning to take an early 4-0 lead.  Sophomore Morgan Craig highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
 
* In the second, the Nittany Lions added two more runs with junior Lainey Scotese and freshman Tori Colagreco each driving in a run. 
 
* Abington nearly doubled its lead in the third after plating five runs in the frame. Five different players drove in runs in the inning as the Nittany Lions increased their lead to 11-0.
 
* The Nittany Lions capped their scoring with a three-run fourth inning to increase the lead to 14-0.  Senior Emily Foxhill, and juniors Marlena Hacker and Isabella Antosiewicz recorded back-to-back-to-back doubles to fuel the inning. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Jess Dinardo (10-8) won her 10th game of the season after going the distance.  She scattered seven hits and struck out seven batters in the win.  With her seven strikeouts, Dinardo is now two shy of 100 for her career.  She'll enter her next outing with 98 career strikeouts.
 
* Craig finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI.
 
* Hacker also had three hits in the game as she went 3-for-4 with two doubles.  She also scored four times and drove in two runs.
 
* Scotese finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI, while Antosiewicz went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. 
 
* Colagreco also had multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
 
* Foxhill and sophomore Riley Logan each went 2-for-3 in the game.  Foxhill scored two runs, while Logan scored once.
 
* For Valley Forge, Marissa Urner went 2-for-3 with a double.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)

* In the night cap, Abington scored four runs in the first and another four in the second to take a commanding 8-0 lead after two full innings of play. Senior Jill Thomas and Craig each recorded sacrifice flies in the first inning.  Scotese highlighted the second inning with a two-run triple.
 
* Valley Forge scored its only run in the third off a Harley Wakeman run scoring hit.
 
* The score remained 8-1 until the fifth when Abington put together a five-run inning.  The Nittany Lions recorded four straight run scoring hits, including a two-run triple by Antosiewicz.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Hacker became the program's all-time leader in triples when she led the top of the first off with her 17th career triple.  She entered the game time tied with 16 triples with former standouts Breanna Lineman (2014-17) and Hailey Gamble (2022-25).  Hacker finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

* Junior Paula Casale (3-9) earned her third win of the season after going the distance.  She allowed just one run while scattering seven hits.  Casale finished the game with four strikeouts.  She now has 97 career strikeouts and will enter her next outing three shy of 100 for her career.
 
* Scotese had a perfect game at the plate as she finished 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
 
* Antosiewicz finished 1-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.
 
* Colagreco went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and two RBI.
 
* Foxhill collected a pair of hits after going 2-for-3 with two runs. 
 
* Freshman Candice Peck also had multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 with a run.
 
* For Valley Forge, Abigail Wood went 2-for-2 with a run, while Urner and Wakeman each went 2-for-3.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh and eighth matchup between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-0 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.

Abington will now wait for the final pairings of the upcoming United East Tournament to be announced.
