Abington Shuts Out Gators, 7-0

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team picked up its first United East Conference (UEC) victory of the season after shutting down Notre Dame of Maryland University, 7-0, on Monday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington cruised through doubles play to earn the team point after first and second doubles came away with 6-1 victories.  The Nittany Lions also got the win at third doubles by forfeit. 
 
* In singles action, senior Soniyah Youngblood and freshman Alyssa Thompson each won their respective matches in shutout fashion by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.  Youngblood won her second singles match against Karen Morales, while Thompson won her fourth singles match over Nijemil Fastorobert.
 
* Sophomore Maman Saly Mbengue defeated Lilly Cudllar in straight sets at third singles.  Mbengue shutout Cudllar in the first set, 6-0, and finished the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set.
 
* At first singles, junior Sevara Tursunboeva went the distance with Notre Dame's Tolulope Olowookorun.  After dropping the first set, 6-1, Tursunboeva bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second set. She trailed Olowookorun 3-2 in the second set and won the final four games to get the win and force a third set. In the 10-point super tie-break, Tursunboeva won four straight points and six of seven to lead 7-2 in the tie-break.  Olowookorun made the score 7-5 before Tursunboeva won the final three points to take the win at 10-5.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Notre Dame.  The Nittany Lions won last year's match at home, 4-3.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 8 as the Nittany Lions host Cedar Crest College in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
