Abington Stays Alive in United East Tournament with Win Over Keystone

Edwardsville, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team survived elimination with a 7-5 victory over top-seed and host Keystone College in an elimination game at the United East Conference (UEC) Tournament on Friday night.  Earlier in the day, Abington fell to second-seeded Penn State Harrisburg, 16-3, as Harrisburg advanced in the winners' bracket of the tournament.
 
Abington will now face the loser of the Harrisburg/Lancaster Bible College match up in another elimination game on Saturday.

How It Happened (vs. Harrisburg)
 
* Abington struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after taking advantage of a two-out error by Harrisburg.  Junior Akira Nakamura reached on the miscue and advanced all the way to second on the play.  Junior Donato Incollingo followed with a base hit to left to score Nakamura for the game's first run.
 
* Harrisburg tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second, however Abington answered in the top of the third with a run of its own.  Freshman Jaxon Horvath drove in Nakamura, who led the inning off with a base hit, with a sacrifice fly to give Abington a 2-1 advantage.
 
* In the bottom of the third, Harrisburg once again tied the game but Abington for the second straight inning answered right back to take control of the lead for the third time in the game. A lead-off walk by junior Nathan Schurga jump started the fourth inning.  Schurga later scored on a hit by Nakamura as Abington took a 3-2 lead.
 
* The back and forth between the two teams came to an end in the bottom of the fourth when Harrisburg took control of the game with a seven-run inning. Harrisburg recorded seven straight hits in the frame before three consecutive ground outs ended the inning. James Quici and Cory Schwanger recorded back-to-back hits that each scored a pair of runs.
 
* Leading 9-3 entering the sixth, Harrisburg added six more runs to take a 15-3 lead.  Demetre Koutras highlighted the inning with a three-run double.  Harrisburg capped the scoring with a run in the seventh.

* Nakamura finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Senior Zach Bauers also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
 
* Schurga reached base twice after drawing two walks while scoring a run in the game.
 
* For Harrisburg, Koutras finished 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Blaine Waltimyer went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Fisher Druck (7-3) went six innings and held Abington to two earned runs while striking out four.
 
All-Time Series (vs. Harrisburg)
Today marked the 30th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 10-20 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series, including 1-7 in the postseason.  
 
How It Happened (vs. Keystone)
 
* Abington scored the game's first run to take a 1-0 lead in the third.  Schurga, who led the inning off with a walk, came around to score on a base hit to right by junior Domenic Lotruglio
 
* The Nittany Lions expanded their lead to 5-0 with a four-run fourth inning.  Schurga highlighted the surge with a two-run triple and then scored on a base hit by senior Garrett Garofalo.  Later in the frame, freshman John Busco connected on a triple of his own that brought around Garofalo to score.
 
* Keystone got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a single run to make the score 5-1.  After a scoreless fifth, Abington added to its lead with two runs in the sixth.  Garofalo and Busco each drove in a run in the inning as the Nittany Lions increased their lead to 7-1.
 
* Keystone made things interesting in the later innings.  The Giants' Dee Rice and Ray Moreta recorded back-to-back run scoring hits in the seventh to make the score 7-3.  Another back-to-back run scoring hits by Emilio Portes and Rice in the eighth cut the Abington lead to 7-5.  With two outs in the inning and runners at second and third, senior Nick Benson entered in relief and struck out Moreta to end the inning.
 
* In the bottom of the ninth, Benson struck out the lead-off batter before a base hit by Benny Hess gave the Giants some life.  However, Benson went on to retire the next two batters to close out the game and record his first save in an Abington uniform.
 
Inside the Box Score (vs. Keystone)
 
* Busco finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and a triple.  He also totaled two RBI.
 
* Freshman Zach Salsbery went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
 
* Garofalo had a two-hit game as he went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Schurga went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.  He also drew a walk and had a sacrifice hit.
 
* Junior Jack Wright (5-2) picked up his fifth win of the season as he held the Giants to just two runs over six innings of work.  Wright finished with six strikeouts; one shy of his season-high.
 
* For Keystone, Hess finished 3-for-5, while Dillion Bird went 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
All-Time Series (vs. Keystone)
Today marked just the third meeting between Abington and Keystone dating back to last season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Giants in the all-time series.  This was the first-ever meeting in the postseason between the two teams.
 
Next Up
Abington will look to stave off elimination again on Saturday as the Nittany Lions face the loser of the Harrisburg/Lancaster Bible matchup.  Due to weather, both games have been pushed to later in the day and will be played at Wilkes University's Bruggerworth Field.  The Harrisburg/Lancaster Bible game is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. with the Abington game tentatively set for 6 p.m.
