Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped is season opener on the road against Cairn University by the score of 3-0 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Mason Activity Center. Senior Zayna Jamaladdin led the Abington attack with a match-high 13 kills.

How It Happened

* In the opening set both teams battled back-and-forth as Abington mounted a 19-15 lead late in the set after a kill by junior Ellie Van Otten gave the Nittany Lions a four-point advantage. However, the Highlanders answered with nine unanswered points to regain the lead at 23-19. The Nittany Lions scored three of the next four points, but the home team got a kill from Maddie Shackelford on set-point to take the first set, 25-22.

* The second set played out similar as both teams played it close early but a 5-1 run late by the Highlanders pushed their lead to 23-17. Abington cut it to 24-20 after a kill by Jamaladdin and an attack error by Cairn, but the Highlanders scored a kill on the next rally to win the set, 25-20, and hold a 2-0 advantage in the match.

* Cairn opened the third set with a 6-2 run and never trailed in the set despite Abington coming within one point of the lead at 17-16. The Nittany Lions ripped off three straight points to cut a four-point deficit to one. Despite the rally, that was as close as Abington would get as the Highlanders answered with four unanswered points to increase the lead to 21-16. The Nittany Lions made it 22-19 after a kill by freshman Jessie Weeks, but the Highlanders closed out the match with the final three points winning the set, 25-19.

Inside the Box Score

* Jamaladdin led the match with 13 kills.

* Four players added four kills each, including senior Kayla Mason, Van Otten and freshman Kamilla Voinalovich. Mason also had seven digs, while Voinalovich finished with 10 digs.

* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch paced the offense with a match-high 25 assists to go along with 12 digs.

* Junior Fabiola Medina totaled a team-high 16 digs.

* For Cairn, Marah Lehman shared the match lead with 13 kills to go along with 16 digs. Liliana Magazzu totaled a match-high 20 digs. Bridget Dahn added seven kills and 17 digs.

All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 12^th meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2014 season. The Nittany Lions are now 5-7 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 5 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Bryn Mawr College in a tri-match with Penn State Brandywine. The Nittany Lions will face the host Owls at 11 a.m. and then take on Brandywine at 1 p.m.
