Abington Edged by Elizabethtown, 3-2, in Fall Opener

Elizabethtown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team opened its fall season with a 3-2 setback at Elizabethtown College in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Stauffer Courts.

How It Happened
 
* In doubles action, both teams split after not being able to fill third flight.  As a result, neither team received the 'team' point for doubles.  The duo of freshman Lilly Downey and junior Jana Zollner won their first match together with a 6-2 victory at first doubles.  Elizabethtown took second doubles, 7-6, after winning the tie-break, 7-0.
 
* Zollner cruised to her first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first singles against Katie Balzano.
 
* Downey also earned her first collegiate win after defeating Taylor Dukes in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. In the second set, Downey jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Dukes before winning the set, 6-2.
 
* At third singles, senior Sevara Tursunboeva went the distance against Maddie Milam.  Tursunboeva rallied after dropping the first set (6-0) to win the second set, 7-6, to force a third set. Tursunboeva won the tie-break point, 11-9.  However, in the third set, Milam came away with a 6-2 victory to take the match.
 
* The Bluejays also had victories at fourth and fifth singles to win the match, 3-2.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Elizabethtown since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 versus the Bluejays in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 26 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Eastern University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 12 p.m.
