Towson, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories as the Nittany Lions took part in a tri-match hosted by Goucher College on Saturday. Abington defeated the host Gophers, 3-0, and then followed with a five-set victory against Eastern Mennonite University.

How It Happened (vs. Goucher)

* Abington made quick work of the Gophers as the Nittany Lion attackers recorded a season-high 42 kills for a three-set match. Abington scored 19 of its points in the third set on kills alone with the other six coming off errors by Goucher.

* Leading 8-7 in the first set, Abington went on a 5-0 run to push ahead of the Gophers. Junior Ellie Van Otten started the mini rally with a kill and capped it off with an ace to make the score 13-7. The Nittany Lions led by as many as 10-points at 24-14 before a service error by the Gophers finished the set at 25-16.

* In the second set, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Abington never trailed in the set and at led by 10 points after a 5-0 run made the score 17-7. A pair of kills by Van Otten and an ace by junior Fabiola Medina helped fuel the run. Later in the set, the Nittany Lions scored six or the final seven points to take the set, 25-14.

* Abington trailed 13-6 in the third set and needed a later rally to extend the set. The Nittany Lions came within one point of the lead after freshman Kamilla Voinalovich recorded a kill to make the score 18-17. After a point by Goucher, back-to-back kills by senior Kayla Mason and sophomore Danielle Langham tied the set at 19-19. The Gophers took advantage of an Abington error to break the tie, but the home team made two straight miscues to give Abington a 21-20 lead.

* Both teams continued to go back-and-forth down the stretch of the set. With Goucher in set-point situation with a 28-27 lead, Voinalovich came through with a kill to tie the set at 28-28. An attack error by the Gophers gave Abington the lead at match-point and on the ensuing rally, Langham recorded the final point of the match with a kill to give the Nittany Lions a 30-28 victory.

Inside the Box Score (vs. Goucher)

* Abington had three players register double-digit kills, including senior Zayna Jamaladdin and Voinalovich who both totaled a match-high 11. Van Otten added 10 kills in the win.

* Medina had a match-high 27 digs that also marked a new season-high after totaling 25 digs in her previous match at Albright College.

* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch tied her season-high with 38 assists to go along with six digs.

* Langham finished the match with seven kills and three block assists in her season debut.

* For Goucher, Juliana Stoneberg and Caroline Carter each totaled six kills. Athena Savick led the team with 18 digs and four aces.

All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Goucher and the first since 2016. The Nittany Lions are now 1-3 versus the Gophers in the all-time series.

How It Happened (vs. Eastern Mennonite)

* After taking the first and third sets in the match to take a 2-1 lead, the Nittany Lions nearly came away with a fourth set victory. Abington led 23-21 late in the set after a service ace by Mamrosch. However, back-to-back kills by the Royals' Reese Fitton tied the set at 23-23. An ace by Alyssa Carr followed by an Abington attack error gave the Royals a 25-23 victory in the set to force a fifth and decisive set.

* In the fifth set, Abington overcame a 6-4 deficit by using 5-0 surge to take a 9-6 advantage. Voinalovich had two kills in the rally, while Van Otten tallied a pair of aces. As the set progressed, the Royals tied the score at 12-12. However, the Nittany Lions answered with three straight points to take the set and match at 15-12. Jamaladdin bookended kills with an ace by Mamrosch for the final three points.

Inside the Box Score (vs. Eastern Mennonite)

* Jamaladdin highlighted the match with a season-high 21 kills; two shy of her career-high. It marked her fourth career 20-plus kill performance.

* After tying her season-high with 38 assists earlier in the day against Goucher, Mamrosch finished with a season-high 39 assists to go along with four aces and 15 digs versus the Royals.

* Medina recorded a match-high 23 digs as she has now registered 20-plus digs in each of her last five matches. She also added three aces

* Junior Angel Morales recorded a season-high 12 digs.

* Langham and Voinalovich each finished the match with eight kills.

* For the Royals, Logan Turchetta led the team with 11 kills, while Rebekah Allen finished with a team-high 13 digs.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Eastern Mennonite.

Abington returns to action on Monday, Sept. 21 as the Nittany Lions travel to Gallaudet University to open United East Conference play. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
