Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down to shock Gallaudet University, 3-2, in the United East Conference (UEC) opener on Monday night at the Gallaudet Field House. It marked the first victory over the Bison since 2019 and the first-ever win on the road.

How It Happened

* After dropping the first two sets, the Nittany Lions needed to win the third set to extend the match. Abington trailed 14-13 midway through the set and scored four straight points, including two kills by senior Kayla Mason to take a 17-14 lead. The Nittany Lions went on to lead by five points after senior Zayna Jamaladdin registered a kill to make the score 23-18. However, the Bison went on a mini 3-0 run to make it a two-point set at 23-21. The Nittany Lions capitalized on back-to-back miscues by the Bison to take the set, 25-21.

* Once again the Nittany Lions were in a position of a must win to continue to extend the match. Abington trailed late in the set at 19-17 but an error by the Bison followed by an ace from freshman Kamilla Voinalovich tied the set. The Bison regained the lead on the next rally but three straight errors by the home team followed by a kill from junior Ellie Van Otten gave the Nittany Lions a 23-20 advantage. On the ensuing serve, the Nittany Lions committed a service error but rebounded with back-to-back kills by Jamaladdin and Van Otten to close out the set at 25-21 forcing a fifth and decisive set.

* Both teams went back and forth early in the fifth set as the Bison held a slight 8-7 advantage after Jada Zarembka registered a kill. Abington followed by scoring six of the next seven points to take a 13-9 lead. Voinalovich had three kills in the run, while sophomore Danielle Langham added two kills. The Bison didn't go away easily as they answered with a 4-1 run to cut the Abington lead to 14-13. Facing match-point, Jamaladdin connected on her team-high 17^th kill of the night to secure the win at 15-13.

Inside the Box Score

* Three players finished in double-figures for kills to lead the Abington attack. Jamaladdin finished with a team-high 17 kills to go along with seven digs. She recorded only three errors on 50 total attacks.

* Voinalovich recorded 13 kills and also had a stellar night on the serve with six aces. She also totaled 11 digs on defense.

* Mason recorded a season-high 11 kills with only three errors on 28 total attempts for a .286 attack percentage.

* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch came through with a season-high 48 assists; two shy of her career-high. She also had 13 digs on defense.

* Junior Fabiola Medina, the United East Defensive Player of the Week, recorded a match-high 37 digs to set a new season-best. Medina also totaled three aces on the night.

* Langham finished with nine kills, while Van Otten added eight kills.

* Junior Angel Morales recorded a season-high 13 digs.

* For Gallaudet, Brielle Worley and Zarembka combined for 52 kills. Worley finished with 31 kills and 10 digs, while Zarembka totaled 21 kills and 27 digs. Gracie Gloster recorded 52 assists and 18 digs.

All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 17^th meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season. The Nittany Lions are now 2-15 versus the Bison in the all-time series. Tonight's victory marked the team's first against Gallaudet since 2019 and the first-ever triumph on the Bison's home court.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
