Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Abington Edged by Rutgers-Camden, 2-1, in Season Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team dropped its season opener to visiting Rutgers University-Camden by the score of 2-1 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field.  The Scarlet Raptors' Dylan Pino scored the go-ahead goal and eventual game-winner in the 77th minute.

How It Happened

* The Nittany Lions scored their first goal of the season off their very first shot as junior Frankie Rafferty put Abington ahead 1-0 with a goal in just the third minute of action.  In a two-on-two situation, sophomore Joe Mahon sent a pass from the left side ahead of Rafferty at the top of the box as he finished with a point-blank shot.  The Camden defender slipped, in an effort to break up the play, which allowed Rafferty to get a clear shot off beating the keeper with a shot towards the lower left of the net.
 
* Abington held on to the lead until the 17th minute when Camden tied the game with a goal by Nik Grello. Willyam Veiga was credited with the assist on the score.
 
* The score remained tied through the rest of the opening half as neither team managed another shot on-goal until the second half.  Each team had a chance to break the tie in the 55th minute.  Rafferty nearly came away with his second goal of the game, but his shot was stopped by Camden's Aleksander Nycz.  Less than :30 seconds later, Abington rookie goalkeeper, Angela D'Asti, denied a shot by Veiga to keep the score tied at 1-1.
 
* Later in the half, sophomore Anthony Abreu connected on a shot on-target but Nycz registered his second save of the half.  Nycz went on to finish the half with five saves.
 
* In the 77th minute, Pino gave Camden its first lead of the game with shot from about 30 or so yards out. Pino came from the right towards the center and fired a shot that found the upper-right portion of the net for the score. 
 
* Abington had opportunities down the stretch to tie the game as sophomore Da'Vid Robinson (81'), junior Mohamed Konneh (82') and Rafferty ('89) all had shots stopped by Nycz.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Abington registered eight of its 10 shots for the game in the second half with five of the eight being on target.  The Nittany Lions' defense held the Scarlet Raptors to just four shots on-target.
 
* Rafferty led the team with four shots with three on-goal.  Konneh also had multiple shots in the game as he finished with two.
 
* D'Asti made his first collegiate start in net and finished with two saves.
 
* For Camden, Nycz totaled five saves in net while Veiga led the team with four shots, including two on-target to go along with his first half assist.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Camden since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-7-1 versus the Scarlet Raptors in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Sept. 4 as the Nittany Lions host Swarthmore College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
