Abington Finishes in a 3-3 Draw with Swarthmore

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team finished in a 3-3 tie with visiting Swarthmore College in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon at Memorial Field.

How It Happened
 
* A foul inside the box led to the game's first goal as Swarthmore capitalized on its early opportunity with a penalty kick goal by Joost Almekinders.  The PK score gave the Garnet a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
 
* Later in the half the Nittany Lions tied the game in the 33rd minute thanks to an impressive shot off a free kick by sophomore Aramis Shire.  Shire took the shot from the left side towards the center of the field and fired a shot from about 40-yards out that made its way through the box without hitting a single player. The ball found its way towards the upper-right side of the net for Shire's first goal of the season.
 
* The score remained tied through the rest of the first half as both team's entered halftime still deadlocked at 1-1.  However, the Garnet broke the tie within the first two minutes of the second half with another penalty kick score.  This time, Dante Cholmeley-Jones converted the kick to give Swarthmore a 2-1 advantage.
 
* The lead was short-lived as Abington responded two minutes later with another equalizing goal.  Junior Frankie Rafferty scored his second goal in as many games to tie the game at 2-2.  Rafferty recovered a rebounded shot by senior Hugh Nungessor inside the box and in-turn came through with a shot that found the back of the net.
 
* Minutes later the Nittany Lions grabbed their first lead of the game when sophomore Da'Vid Robinson scored his goal in an Abington uniform.  Robinson's go-ahead score came in the 56th minute with junior Mohamed Konneh assisting on the play.
 
* In the 67th minute, Swarthmore ended up tying the game at 3-3 with Shlok Kaul connecting on a shot for the Garnet.  The play originated off a corner kick attempt allowing the Garnet to maneuver through the box.  Kaul kicked in a passed ball for the score.
 
* Senior Nick Lachawiec had two on-target shots within a 10-miniute span, with the latter coming in the 82nd minute.  Both times, the Garnet's keeper, Eli Cogan, made the stop to keep the score intact at 3-3. 
 
* In the 85th minute, freshman goalkeeper Angelo D'Asti made a save on an off balanced shot by Almekinders to hold the Garnet from regaining the lead.  D'Asti finished the game with three saves.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Both teams were pretty even on shot attempts with the Garnet holding a slight edge at 14-10.  Abington finished with eight on-goal shots to the seven by Swarthmore.
 
* Swarthmore finished the game with eight corners, including five in the first half.  Abington totaled all six of its attempts in the second half.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Swarthomore since the start of the 2013 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-6-2 versus the Garnet in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
