Abington Defeats St. Mary’s to Open United East Play

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team opened United East Conference (UEC) play with a big win over visiting St. Mary's College on Saturday afternoon at a rainy and windy Memorial Field.  The Nittany Lions defeated the preseason favorite Seahawks, 2-1.

How It Happened
 
* Abington broke a scoreless tie in the 28th minute when sophomore Aramis Shire floated a free kick into the box leading to the game's first goal.  Junior Frankie Rafferty completed the play connecting on his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
 
* Freshman goalkeeper Hector Ortiz kept the Seahawks off the board in the first half despite facing nine shots.  Ortiz made a key save in the 33rd minute to keep the Abington lead intact.  He finished the first half with four saves and went on to make six total in the game.
 
*Abington doubled its lead in the 64th minute thanks to a score by freshman Shane Lachawiec.  Junior Nico Anagnostopoulos led with a through pass to Rafferty who then made a cross pass from the right side into the box finding Lachawiec for the goal.  It marked his second goal in as many games.
 
* Later in the half the Seahawks made things interesting with a goal by Zach Blaum to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 87th minute. 
 
* St. Mary's managed one more shot in attempt to tie the game in the 89th minute but Nick Haney's attempt was wide-left of the net.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Ortiz recorded a season-high six saves in net for the Nittany Lions as he picked up his first collegiate victory.
 
* Lachawiec's second half goal marked his second straight score and his first collegiate game-winner.
 
* Rafferty's four goals thus far this season is a new career-high.  He scored three goals last season.
 
* For St. Mary's, Braden Kindred finished with a game-high six shots, while Haney totaled four. The Seahawks outshot the Nittany Lions, 16-5, in the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-8-0 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cairn University in a United East contest.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
