Abington Edged by Wilkes in Five-Sets

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team went the distance with Wilkes University in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Arnaud C. Marts Center. However, the Colonels came away with the 3-2 victory after taking the fifth set, 15-8.

How It Happened
 
* After dropping the first set by a slight margin (24-26), the Nittany Lions bounced back to take the second set that went back-and-forth throughout.  Abington held a three-point lead on three separate occasions in the set which turned out to be the biggest lead of the set.  The Nittany Lions face set-point at 25-24, however two straight attack errors by Wilkes gave Abington a new life in the set.  Junior Fabiola Medina sealed the set victory with an ace as the Nittany Lions tied the match at 1-1.
 
* Set three turned out to be another back-and-forth battle.  Abington pulled ahead late after trailing 20-19.  The Nittany Lions ripped off five straight points to take a 24-20 advantage. Senior Zayna Jamaladdin featured three kills in the run.  The Colonels cut into the deficit at 24-22, but Jamaladdin followed with her seventh kill of the set to give Abington a 25-22 victory.

* Abington trailed 12-7 midway through the fourth set but a 5-0 run by the Nittany Lions tied the set at 12-12. Despite the change in momentum, the Colonels responded by scoring 13 of the next 14 points to win the set, 25-13, and force a fifth and decisive set.
 
* In the fifth set, Wilkes jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but Abington eventually cut the deficit to 6-5 after a mini 4-1 run.  The Colonels scored three of the next four points to lead 10-7 before scoring five of the final six points to take the set, 15-8, for the match win.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Jamaladdin led the Nittany Lions with 21 kills as she tied her season-high.  She also had five digs in the match.
 
* Freshman Kamilla Voinalovich also totaled double-digit kills as she finished with 11 to go along with four digs.
 
* Junior Ellie Van Otten added 10 kills while totaling four blocks on defense.  Van Otten had two block assists and two solo blocks.
 
* Medina recorded a team-high 20 digs and also totaled five aces.  With her five aces, Medina moved into 10th place on the program's all-time aces list surpassing Laine Kulpinski who totaled 118 aces from 2022 to 2023.  Medina now has 119 career aces.
 
* Senior Ryenn Mamrosch recorded her ninth 30-plus assist performance of the year after totaling 38 assists.  Mamrosch also had nine digs.
 
* For Wilkes, Mia Leon totaled a match-high 29 kills, while Abby Dornblaser finished with 16 kills and 19 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Wilkes since the start of the 2024 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1 versus the Colonels in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Brandywine in a United East Conference contest. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
