Abington Falls Short at Rutgers-Newark, 3-1

Newark, N.J. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest on the road against Rutgers University – Newark by the score of 3-1 on Sunday evening at Frederick Douglass Field.

How It Happened

* Newark scored two quick goals right off the bat as the Scarlett Raiders led 2-0 before three full minutes of game action.  Erick Cortes scored the first goal 51 seconds into the game and was followed by a goal from Zahradeen Amadou who scored in the third minute.
 
* Later in the half the Nittany Lions cut the deficit to one goal after junior Mohamed Konneh connected on his first goal of the season in the 34th minute.
 
* Freshman goalkeeper Angelo D'Asti made a key stop in the final minutes of the half as he denied a shot by Newark's Derek Jimenez to keep it a one goal game.  D'Asti finished the game with a season-high five saves.

* In the opening minute of the second half, Newark added an insurance goal to increase its lead to 3-1.  Gabe Gomez came through with the score with Amadou assisting on the play.
 
* Newark held Abington to just two shots in the second half.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the second meeting and the first since 2023 between Abington and Newark.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-1-0 versus the Scarlett Raiders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Haverford College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
