Softball Finds Winning Path Over Valley Forge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Penn State Abington softball team swept Valley Forge Christian College on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Lions won two straight after a 10-2 victory in game one and a 12-4 win in game two to improve to 4-6 on the season.
 
Game 1 – Abington 10, Valley Forge 2

Both teams went head-to-head in the first four innings before Abington used a five-run sixth inning to take the 8-2 lead.
Mariellen Medernach posted a single base hit to earn two RBIs before scoring a run of her own off of Sam Kidd's double base hit, making it 7-2 Abington.

Abington managed to score two additional runs in the top of sixth as pitcher Rebecca Patenaude struck out the Lady Patriots' batter for the win.

Medernach went 2-for-4 with four hits and five RBIs, while teammate Melissa Kulp went 3-for5, scoring three runs and an RBI.

Patenaude started on the mound and fanned nine batters in all seven innings pitched, giving up just two runs in four hits.
 
Game 2 – Abington 12, Valley Forge 4


In game two of the series, Abington wasted no time at the plate as junior Trish Watson slammed the ball over the fence for a three-run homerun to make it 6-1 after the second inning.

The Lady Lions kept the heat coming, posting three additional runs as Melissa Kulp posted two RBIs on a base hit, giving Abington the 11-4 lead after the fourth inning.

Abington closed out the fifth, extending the lead with an additional run before shutting out Valley Forge in the final inning for the 12-4 victory.

Kulp started on the mound for the Lady Lions as she gave up four runs in nine hits, striking out two batters at the plate.

Watson led the team with three RBIs after going 2-for -3, scoring two runs herself.

 
The Lady Lions will play their first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games of the season as they entertain the College of St. Elizabeth for an 2 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday March 28th.
