Amidst a beautiful day, the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team headed to Bryn Mawr College to get 2012 season underway. Last season the Lady Lions finished 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the NEAC Conference . The Owls' of Bryn Mawr finished their 2011 season with a record of 6-9 overall, 0-9 Centennial.
Penn State Abington drew blood first with an unassisted goal from freshman attack,
Nicole Hayes at the 27:23 mark of the first half. This would be the Lady Lions only lead of the game. Bryn Mawr answered back fast, scoring six unanswered goals in less than four minutes from four different players.
The Lady Lions tacked on two more unassisted goals by sophomore attack
Danielle Savoni and freshman midfielder
Victoria Brady, before the close of the first half. Abington trailed by a score of 11-3 at the end of the first half.
Bryn Mawr came out shooting to start the second half, scoring five unanswered goals. Abington showed a glimmer of hope when
Nicole Hayes and
Victoria Brady scored back-to-back goals. Freshman defender
Leila Monroe lead the team with four groundballs, while
Danielle Savoni,
Nicole Hayes, and
Kirsten Quinn each had three respectively.
Despite the Lady Lions 19 ground balls, 22 shots, and 15 caused turnovers, the Owls' offense proved to be too much for this young squad. The Owls' soared past the Lady Lions with a final score of 17-5.
Penn State Abington will be back in action Saturday, March 10
th at 4 p.m. when it face Wesley College.
